Mahindra has confirmed that all its petrol vehicles can safely use E20 fuel, while newer models are specially tuned for improved performance and fuel efficiency.

Mahindra has officially addressed growing concerns surrounding E20 petrol, reassuring customers that all of its petrol-powered vehicles can safely operate on the higher ethanol-blended fuel. The clarification comes amid widespread discussions on social media and questions from vehicle owners regarding the compatibility of older models.

In an official response shared through its Customer Care team, Mahindra stated that its petrol engines are fully compliant with current fuel standards and can safely use E20 petrol.“Mahindra engines are fully compliant with existing gasoline standards and all our vehicles can be operated safely with E20 fuel,” the company said in its statement.

Newer Models Optimised for E20 Fuel

While confirming compatibility across its petrol lineup, Mahindra also highlighted an important difference between older and newer vehicles.

According to the company, petrol vehicles manufactured on or after April 1, 2025 have been specially calibrated and fine-tuned to maximize the benefits of E20 fuel. These updated models are designed to deliver improved acceleration, smoother engine performance, and better fuel efficiency when running on the ethanol-blended petrol.

The automaker noted that the enhanced engine calibration allows newer vehicles to extract the best possible performance from the revised fuel composition.

Older Mahindra Cars Remain Safe

For customers who own Mahindra petrol vehicles manufactured before April 1, 2025, the company has offered reassurance that there is no need for concern.

Mahindra confirmed that these vehicles can continue to run safely on E20 petrol without any risk of engine damage. However, drivers may experience minor differences in fuel economy or acceleration, depending on driving habits, road conditions, and vehicle usage.

The company emphasized that these changes are expected to be marginal and should not affect the overall reliability or safety of the engine.

Why E20 Fuel Feels Different

The clarification comes at a time when E20 petrol has become a topic of discussion among vehicle owners across India.

E20 fuel contains 20% ethanol blended with petrol, compared to 10% ethanol in the earlier E10 blend. Since ethanol carries slightly less energy than conventional petrol, some drivers may notice a small reduction in mileage, particularly in vehicles that were not specifically calibrated for the newer fuel.

Industry experts have consistently maintained that this slight drop in efficiency is a normal characteristic of the fuel and does not indicate any mechanical issue in vehicles designed to support E20.

Automakers Unite to Address Customer Concerns

Mahindra’s statement follows a recent government briefing where leading automobile manufacturers, including Toyota, Maruti Suzuki, Hero MotoCorp, and Hyundai, reaffirmed that E20 petrol is safe for compatible vehicles.

The manufacturers acknowledged that while some owners could observe a slight decline in fuel efficiency, the fuel itself does not damage engines that meet compatibility standards.

Recently, Toyota also clarified a viral incident involving the Innova Hycross, stating that the reported issue was linked to contaminated fuel rather than the use of E20 petrol.

What It Means for Mahindra Owners

Mahindra’s latest clarification provides much-needed reassurance for both current owners and prospective buyers. Whether driving an older petrol model or purchasing a new one, customers can confidently use E20 fuel without worrying about engine safety.

Owners of pre-April 2025 models should simply expect the possibility of slight variations in mileage or throttle response, while buyers of newer Mahindra vehicles can benefit from engines specifically engineered to perform more efficiently with India’s evolving fuel standards.

As India continues its transition toward higher ethanol blending, automakers are increasingly working to educate consumers and dispel misconceptions surrounding the use of E20 petrol.
