The veteran India all-rounder entered an exceptionally exclusive club by completing the double of 4,000 runs and 300 wickets in Test cricket. Jadeja became only the second Indian cricketer after legendary Kapil Dev to achieve the feat.

More remarkably, only four players in the history of Test cricket have achieved this combination — Kapil Dev, Ian Botham, Daniel Vettori and Ravindra Jadeja.

For Jadeja, it is another reminder of just how valuable he has been to Team India, particularly in the longest format.

How Jadeja Reached the 4,000-Run Landmark

Jadeja completed his 4,000 Test runs during India’s first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in November 2025.

He entered India’s first innings needing only 10 more runs to reach the landmark. The left-hander went on to score 27 runs from 45 deliveries, taking himself beyond 4,000 career Test runs.

At the time he crossed the landmark, Jadeja had already accumulated well over 300 Test wickets, meaning the batting milestone officially placed him alongside some of the greatest all-rounders the game has seen.

It was not merely another round number. It was a milestone that underlined the rare balance Jadeja has maintained between run-scoring and wicket-taking throughout his Test career.

Only Kapil Dev Had Done It for India Before Jadeja

The Indian name that immediately stands out alongside Jadeja is Kapil Dev.

Kapil finished his celebrated Test career with 5,248 runs and 434 wickets, establishing himself as one of cricket’s greatest all-rounders.

For decades, no other Indian managed to combine at least 4,000 Test runs with 300 wickets.

Then came Jadeja.

By reaching the landmark, the left-arm spinner became the first Indian after Kapil to enter this incredibly exclusive club — a remarkable achievement considering the number of world-class players India have produced across generations.

Jadeja Also Reached the Milestone at Remarkable Speed

There is another statistic that makes Jadeja’s achievement even more impressive.

He completed the 4,000-run and 300-wicket Test double in his 88th Test, making him the second-fastest cricketer to achieve it. England great Ian Botham remains the fastest, having completed the double in his 72nd Test.

That puts Jadeja’s achievement into perspective.

He has spent much of his career batting in the lower-middle order, often arriving when India are either looking for quick runs or attempting to recover from difficult situations. At the same time, he has remained one of India’s biggest wicket-taking threats, especially on turning surfaces.

The rarity of Jadeja’s record becomes clearer when looking at the names who have achieved the 4,000 runs and 300 wickets double in Test cricket.

Kapil Dev finished with 5,248 runs and 434 wickets, Ian Botham accumulated 5,200 runs and 383 wickets, while New Zealand great Daniel Vettori ended his Test career with 4,531 runs and 362 wickets. Jadeja became only the fourth member of that prestigious group.

It is a list containing players from different eras and with very different styles, but they share one thing — the ability to change Test matches in more than one discipline.

Jadeja’s development as a Test batter has been one of the most important chapters of his career.
