Hardik Pandya could finally be closing in on a return to competitive cricket after spending several months away from action. The 32-year-old has been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru after suffering a leg strain. If declared fit, Pandya is expected to feature in the three one-day matches against Australia A in Puducherry later this month.

Hardik Pandya’s Return Depends on Fitness Test

Pandya has spent the past few months working through his rehabilitation programme in Bengaluru.

While being named in the India A squad represents an encouraging development, the BCCI has placed an asterisk against his name, indicating that he must receive fitness clearance before taking the field.

Should he pass the tests, the Australia A series could serve as a valuable stepping stone for the all-rounder before returning to senior international cricket.

Ruturaj Gaikwad to Captain One-Day Team

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been handed the responsibility of leading India A in the three one-day matches, with Devdutt Padikkal named his deputy.

Alongside Pandya, the batting group includes Sai Sudharsan, Rajat Patidar, Priyansh Arya and Naman Dhir, while Kumar Kushagra and Prabhsimran Singh have been selected as wicketkeeping options.

The bowling and all-round departments feature names such as Nishant Sindhu, Vipraj Nigam, Arshin Kulkarni, Arshad Khan, Gurjapneet Singh and Yash Thakur.

Devdutt Padikkal Gets Red-Ball Captaincy

While Gaikwad will take charge of the one-day side, Devdutt Padikkal has been named captain for the two multi-day matches against Australia A.

Padikkal enters the assignment after an impressive run in Sri Lanka, where he registered two centuries.

B Sai Sudharsan will serve as his vice-captain, marking his return after recovering from a toe injury.

The Tamil Nadu batter’s comeback will be closely followed, particularly as the Australia A series provides another opportunity for players on the fringes of the senior Indian side to strengthen their case for higher honours.

Duleep Trophy Century Earns Kumar Kushagra India A Call-Up

One of the notable selections is Kumar Kushagra, who has been rewarded following his impressive performance in the Duleep Trophy final.

The Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batter struck a century in the final and has now been selected in both the multi-day and one-day India A squads.

N Jagadeesan has also been included as a wicketkeeping option for the red-ball matches.

Meanwhile, pacer V Vyshak has been named in the multi-day squad, but like Pandya, his participation is subject to fitness clearance.

India A vs Australia A Series Begins September 22

India A and Australia A are scheduled to face each other in two multi-day matches and three one-day games in Puducherry, with the series beginning on September 22.

Beyond the results, the matches could prove important for several players attempting to push themselves closer to senior national selection.

For Pandya in particular, the assignment carries added significance. After months of rehabilitation, simply returning to competitive cricket and demonstrating his fitness would represent an important milestone.
