East Zone captain Ishan Kishan followed his sensational first-innings 270 with another strong batting display against South Zone on Day 4 of the Duleep Trophy 2026 final in Chennai.

East Zone moved closer to putting themselves in a commanding position in the Duleep Trophy 2026 final against South Zone on Day 4 in Chennai, with captain Ishan Kishan once again making his presence felt with the bat.

After smashing a remarkable 270 in the first innings, Kishan continued his impressive match by bringing up a half-century in East Zone’s second innings. His contribution further strengthened a side that had already secured a huge first-innings advantage.

For South Zone, meanwhile, captain Tilak Varma’s agonising dismissal for 99 proved to be one of the defining moments of the day.

Tilak Varma Misses Century by Just One Run

South Zone resumed Day 4 on 242/6, facing the enormous challenge of getting close to East Zone’s imposing first-innings total of 708.

Tilak Varma and Chama Milind initially provided resistance and gave South Zone hope of reducing the deficit.

However, Milind was eventually dismissed for 43, and his departure triggered a rapid collapse. South Zone lost their remaining wickets quickly, with four falling for just 18 runs.

The biggest disappointment came when Tilak was dismissed for 99, falling just one run short of what would have been a memorable century in the final.

South Zone were eventually bowled out for 336, handing East Zone a massive 372-run first-innings lead.

First-Innings Lead Could Prove Decisive

The advantage is particularly significant in a domestic final where the first-innings lead can become crucial if the contest ends without an outright result.

East Zone’s mammoth 708 had already placed South Zone under enormous pressure, and dismissing their opponents for 336 further strengthened their grip on the contest.

Much of that advantage was built around Kishan’s extraordinary first-innings performance.

The East Zone captain produced a sensational 270, anchoring his team’s huge total and delivering one of the standout performances of the tournament.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Fails to Fire

East Zone returned to bat with a commanding lead, but teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was unable to produce a substantial innings.

The youngster managed just 8 runs before being stumped, giving South Zone an early breakthrough.

However, that wicket did little to dramatically alter the balance of the match.

By the end of the second session, East Zone had reached 95/2 after 23 overs, extending their overall advantage while continuing to put South Zone under pressure.

Ishan Kishan Continues Brilliant Final

Kishan then ensured there was no easy route back into the match for South Zone.

The skipper followed his monumental first-innings double century with another confident performance, reaching his half-century and further frustrating the opposition attack.

Shikhar Mohan also provided valuable support as East Zone continued building on their already formidable advantage.

Kishan’s performance across both innings has made him the central figure of the final. His 270 gave East Zone the platform for their 708-run first innings, while his second-innings contribution has helped keep South Zone firmly on the defensive.

South Zone Facing Uphill Battle

For Tilak Varma and South Zone, the task has become increasingly difficult.

Tilak’s 99 demonstrated plenty of resistance, but his dismissal just short of three figures was followed by a collapse that prevented South Zone from significantly reducing the deficit.

With East Zone holding the crucial first-innings advantage and continuing to add runs in their second innings, the pressure is now firmly on South Zone.

Unless the match produces a dramatic turnaround, East Zone’s enormous first-innings total and Kishan’s remarkable batting performance could ultimately prove decisive in determining the destination of the Duleep Trophy title.
