India Predicted XI vs Afghanistan: Ishan Kishan Injury Opens Door for Sanju Samson; Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Keep Opening Spot?

India will begin their three-match T20I series against Afghanistan on September 13 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, with several selection calls likely to keep fans guessing until the toss. The spotlight will be on Jasprit Bumrah’s return, teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s role at the top and, following a late injury scare, the wicketkeeping position.

The series also marks a significant leadership change for India. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed captain, while Tilak Varma will serve as his deputy. With a blend of established internationals and emerging talent in the squad, the Afghanistan assignment offers India an opportunity to test different combinations.

Ishan Kishan injury changes the equation

India’s plans suffered a setback when Ishan Kishan sustained a back sprain during Friday’s training session. Kishan was facing pacer Navdeep Saini when he attempted to evade a short delivery and appeared to hurt his back.

The wicketkeeper-batter was visibly uncomfortable, received attention from the team physio and subsequently left the nets without returning to bat. The extent of the problem was expected to become clearer after a period of rest.

Kishan’s fitness could have a direct impact on India’s batting combination. If he is not cleared for the opener, Sanju Samson becomes the obvious wicketkeeping option and could return to the playing XI.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or Sanju Samson — who opens?

One of the most intriguing decisions concerns India’s opening combination.

The explosive Abhishek Sharma appears a natural choice at the top, but who partners him could shape the rest of India’s batting order.

Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has strengthened his case after impressive recent performances and is among India’s leading top-order options for the series. Pairing him with Abhishek would give India two aggressive left-handers capable of attacking from the opening over.

However, Sanju Samson remains another possible top-order option. Former India captain Ajinkya Rahane has backed Samson for a place in India’s top three while also urging Sooryavanshi to continue playing his natural game.

If India stick with Abhishek and Vaibhav as openers, Samson could keep wickets and operate in the middle order, particularly if Kishan is unavailable.

Shreyas Iyer faces Afghanistan’s biggest weapon

Captain Shreyas Iyer, vice-captain Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube could form the core of India’s middle order.

That section of the batting line-up may face its sternest examination against Rashid Khan and Afghanistan’s formidable spin attack. Rashid’s battle against Iyer and India’s middle-order hitters could prove decisive, particularly once the powerplay ends.

India also have an interesting choice between Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Sundar offers off-spin alongside useful lower-order batting, potentially giving Iyer another option against Afghanistan’s varied batting line-up.

Jasprit Bumrah ready to make his comeback

Perhaps the biggest boost for India is the return of Jasprit Bumrah.

The star pacer was originally included in the squad subject to fitness clearance after recovering from a knee injury. Bumrah has since returned to training in Delhi and looked sharp during the nets, where he also tested young Sooryavanshi with his pace and variations.

Bumrah’s presence immediately strengthens India’s attack. Arshdeep Singh is likely to partner him in the pace department, while Varun Chakaravarthy could be India’s specialist mystery-spin option.

Axar Patel should provide further balance through his left-arm spin and lower-order batting, with Washington potentially giving India another spin-bowling all-rounder.

Meanwhile, Harshit Rana is no longer available for the series after suffering another strain during his recovery from a hamstring injury. Yash Thakur has been named as his replacement.
