Vaibhav Sooryavanshi‘s rise in Indian cricket has been nothing short of extraordinary. At just 15 years old, the fearless batter has already become one of the country’s most talked-about young talents. But while his explosive performances in T20 cricket have grabbed headlines, the next chapter of his journey could prove to be even more important.

The young Bihar batter recently enjoyed a memorable outing during India’s T20I series against Zimbabwe, where he scored 151 runs in three matches, maintained an impressive average of 50.33, smashed two half-centuries, and was deservedly named the Player of the Series as India completed a dominant 3-0 clean sweep.

His remarkable performances have also reflected in the latest ICC T20I batting rankings, where he made a massive jump into the top 50 in less than a month after making his international debut. For a player who is only beginning his international journey, it marks another significant milestone.

However, the bigger story may not be about his T20 success.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has handed Sooryavanshi another major opportunity by naming him the vice-captain of the East Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy. While the leadership role itself is an honour, cricket experts believe the selection sends a much stronger message about the board’s long-term plans.

Following his sensational IPL 2026 campaign, where he emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest attractions, many former cricketers had openly backed the teenager for an early India call-up. That prediction soon became reality as Sooryavanshi entered the national T20 setup.

Now, the conversation has shifted beyond power-hitting and fearless stroke play.

The biggest question surrounding the youngster is whether he can successfully transition into red-ball cricket, where patience, discipline and temperament are equally as important as attacking instincts. Test cricket demands consistency over long periods, and it is considered the ultimate examination for any batter.

Interestingly, Sooryavanshi himself has never hidden his ambitions. He has repeatedly spoken about his dream of representing India in Test cricket, revealing that his father always encouraged him to respect the longest format of the game.

The upcoming Duleep Trophy, beginning on August 23, could therefore become one of the defining moments of his early career. The prestigious first-class tournament has historically served as a platform for India’s finest domestic performers to impress national selectors.

Although Sooryavanshi has already featured in eight first-class matches, his record remains modest with 207 runs at an average of 17.25, including a highest score of 93. Those numbers suggest there is still plenty of room for growth, but age is firmly on his side.

This tournament will provide him with the opportunity to test himself against experienced domestic bowlers under longer playing conditions. Reports also suggest he could open the innings alongside seasoned batter Abhimanyu Easwaran, offering the teenager valuable exposure at the highest domestic level.

Even if immediate success does not arrive, the opportunity itself carries enormous significance.

The BCCI appears determined to develop Sooryavanshi beyond the shortest format instead of allowing him to be labelled as only a T20 specialist. His inclusion in the Duleep Trophy reflects a clear investment in his long-term development across all three formats of international cricket.

For Indian cricket, nurturing versatile young talent has become a priority, and Sooryavanshi now finds himself at the centre of that vision.

With the Asian Games scheduled later this year and more international assignments expected to follow, the teenager’s calendar is filling up rapidly. But before returning to white-ball cricket, he must first face what many consider the toughest examination in Indian domestic cricket.
