India Squad for West Indies ODIs: Rohit Sharma in Focus After Lord’s 138, Ishan Kishan’s Absence Could Bring Rishabh Pant Back

India’s squad selection for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies is set to attract plenty of attention, and much of it will inevitably centre around Rohit Sharma. With the 2027 ODI World Cup now roughly a year away, every selection decision involving the former India captain is being viewed through the prism of India’s long-term plans.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is expected to name the squads for India’s upcoming white-ball assignment against the West Indies shortly. The tour comprises three ODIs and five T20Is, with the opening ODI scheduled for September 27.

While several positions could change because of player availability, the biggest talking point remains Rohit.

Rohit Sharma’s 138 changes the conversation

Speculation over Rohit Sharma’s ODI future had intensified during India’s series in England in July.

According to reports, selectors had considered moving towards Yashasvi Jaiswal as they looked to give the younger opener sufficient exposure ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

Then came Rohit’s answer with the bat.

The veteran opener smashed 138 at Lord’s, producing the kind of innings that made any immediate discussion about dropping him far more complicated.

Following the BCCI’s review and future roadmap meeting in Mumbai, board secretary Devajit Saikia publicly questioned why there should be speculation about Rohit’s place when he continued to score runs.

That position makes a dramatic omission against the West Indies appear unlikely. At the same time, Jaiswal could also find a place in the squad as India attempt to balance immediate results with preparations for the next World Cup.

Rishabh Pant could finally get another ODI opportunity

Another major selection discussion surrounds Rishabh Pant.

With Ishan Kishan unavailable because of India’s Asian Games campaign in Japan, Pant could be brought back into the ODI set-up.

It would mark a significant opportunity for the wicketkeeper-batter, who has been out of India’s 50-over plans for an extended period.

Pant was dropped from the ODI squad ahead of the home series against Afghanistan in June. Before that, he had largely remained behind KL Rahul in the wicketkeeping pecking order and went without an ODI appearance for a considerable period.

He has not played an ODI since August 2024.

The West Indies series could now provide selectors with an opportunity to reassess what Pant can offer in the format.

Why Pant’s left-handed batting could help his case

There is another factor working in Pant’s favour — India’s batting combination.

The ODI middle order contains several right-handed options, meaning Pant’s presence could offer valuable left-right variation inside the top five.

His attacking ability against both pace and spin also provides India with a different option through the middle overs.

However, KL Rahul is still expected to remain India’s first-choice wicketkeeper in ODIs. Pant’s potential recall, therefore, would not necessarily mean an immediate change behind the stumps.

With Dhruv Jurel potentially leading Rest of India against Ranji Trophy champions Jammu & Kashmir in the Irani Cup, Pant appears to have a clearer route back into the ODI squad.

Mohammed Siraj set for return

The bowling department could also see a familiar face return.

Mohammed Siraj is expected to be available after being withdrawn from India’s UK assignment as part of his workload management.

His return would provide some much-needed experience to a bowling attack likely to be without several regular players.

India will have to manage an unusual selection situation because the West Indies series overlaps with the Asian Games in Japan.

Asian Games leave several holes in India’s ODI squad

The Indian cricket team’s Asian Games campaign begins on September 28, just a day after the opening ODI against the West Indies, with the tournament final scheduled for October 3.

As a result, several players will not be available for the ODI series.

Along with Ishan Kishan, India are expected to be without Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah.

Their absence could open the door for fringe players who have been waiting for an extended run at the international level.

It also gives the selectors an opportunity to test India’s bench strength without completely dismantling the core ODI combination.

All eyes remain on Rohit

For all the possible changes, however, Rohit Sharma remains the headline selection.

The question is no longer simply whether he deserves a place in the next series. His recent performances make a strong case for that.

The larger question is whether the selectors see the veteran opener remaining at the heart of India’s plans all the way to the 2027 ODI World Cup.

His 138 at Lord’s offered a powerful reminder that Rohit can still produce defining international innings. The West Indies selection could now provide another indication of how the BCCI and selectors intend to manage the next phase of his ODI career.

For Rishabh Pant, meanwhile, circumstances have created an opportunity. After a lengthy absence from the format, the West Indies series could finally give him another chance to establish himself in India’s 50-over plans.
