India captain Shreyas Iyer won his 11th toss in 12 T20Is during the second match against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Shreyas Iyer may not be able to control how a coin lands, but his extraordinary run at the toss has now earned him a place in the record books.

The India T20I captain won the toss against Afghanistan in the second match of the three-game series at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Tuesday, September 15, and opted to field first.

It was Iyer’s 11th toss victory in only 12 T20Is as captain, giving him the world record for the most tosses won by a skipper after his first 12 matches in charge.

Shreyas Iyer’s remarkable 11-out-of-12 record

Since taking over India’s T20I captaincy against Ireland in June 2026, Iyer has enjoyed an almost unbelievable run with the coin.

He has now won 11 of his first 12 tosses, moving ahead of Qatar’s Mirza Baig and Philippines’ Henry Tyler, who had won 10 tosses each at the same stage of their captaincy careers.

Among captains representing ICC full-member nations, former England captain Eoin Morgan and Bangladesh’s Mahmudullah had nine toss victories each after 12 matches.

That puts Iyer two clear at the top among full-member captains and one ahead of the previous overall benchmark.

The only time Iyer lost the toss…

What makes the sequence even more striking is that there has been just one exception.

Iyer’s only toss defeat as India’s T20I captain came against Zimbabwe in Harare. India, however, went on to win that match convincingly, meaning the rare toss defeat did little to hurt the team’s fortunes on the day.

Every other time Iyer has walked out for the toss as captain, the coin has fallen India’s way.

His sequence includes toss victories against Ireland, England, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan.

Record comes during Afghanistan series

Iyer’s latest piece of history arrived during India’s ongoing three-match T20I series against Afghanistan.

India entered the second match with a 1-0 series lead after securing a seven-wicket victory in the opener in Delhi on September 13.

Iyer had won the toss in that contest as well.

Two days later, he repeated the trick at the same venue and chose to put Afghanistan into bat, unknowingly adding another unusual record to his captaincy résumé in the process.

The Mumbai-born batter took charge of India’s T20I side during the Ireland series in June 2026.

His early spell as captain was challenging from a results perspective. India endured defeats against Ireland and subsequently struggled during their T20I assignment in England.

Results improved considerably during the Zimbabwe series, where India registered victories, before carrying that momentum into the Afghanistan assignment.

While toss statistics have no bearing on a captain’s tactical ability, winning 11 out of 12 is an extraordinary sequence purely from a probability standpoint.

The statistic may ultimately be little more than a fascinating piece of cricket trivia, but 11 wins from 12 tosses is the kind of streak rarely seen at international level.

And as Iyer continues to establish himself as India’s T20I leader, he already has one unusual world record attached to his name.
