Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli on verge of massive records vs West Indies: Kohli needs just 59 runs, Rohit eyes 12,000-run club

When Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli walk out against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram, there will be more at stake than simply getting India off to a winning start.

Two of Indian cricket’s most decorated batters are within touching distance of several significant records.

India’s three-match ODI series against the Caribbean side begins at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27, followed by matches in Guwahati on September 30 and New Chandigarh on October 3. All three ODIs are scheduled to begin at 2 pm IST.

With Shubman Gill leading India and KL Rahul serving as vice-captain, the series is also another step in the team’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

But for Rohit and Kohli, the next three matches could also rewrite several entries in cricket’s record books.

Kohli just 59 runs away from 15,000 ODI runs

The biggest milestone belongs to Virat Kohli.

Kohli enters the West Indies series needing only 59 runs to complete 15,000 runs in ODI cricket. If he gets there, he is also in line to become the fastest batter to reach the landmark by innings.

It is hardly the only record within his reach.

Kohli has historically enjoyed facing the West Indies. Across 43 ODIs, he has scored 2,261 runs from 41 innings at an average of 66.50, including nine centuries and 11 half-centuries. His highest score against them is an unbeaten 157.

Two more centuries during the series could also put Kohli in position to set or surpass major marks involving List A hundreds, international centuries against West Indies and international centuries at home.

More records within Kohli’s reach

The numbers do not stop there.

Kohli needs 110 runs during the series to move into position for the record for most ODI runs at home, while 180 runs would take him to 13,000 ODI runs while batting at No. 3.

He is also 215 runs away from 17,000 international runs in Asia.

Another productive series could therefore see Kohli pass several landmarks at once.

There is also history between Kohli and the Caribbean attack. In 2018, he produced the remarkable feat of scoring centuries in three successive ODIs against West Indies.

Now, eight years later, another West Indies series offers him the chance to add fresh records to an already extraordinary ODI career.

Rohit Sharma needs 105 runs for 12,000

Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, is chasing a major milestone of his own.

The former India captain needs 105 runs to reach 12,000 ODI runs, a landmark that would add another achievement to one of the most prolific ODI careers of his generation.

Rohit has also enjoyed considerable success against the West Indies.

He has accumulated 1,613 runs from 35 innings in 37 ODIs, averaging 57.60, with three centuries and 12 fifties. His highest ODI score against the Caribbean side is 162.

But it is not only the 12,000-run mark that is waiting.

Rohit requires 135 runs to complete 10,000 ODI runs as an opener, while another 185 runs would put him in position to become the highest-scoring opener against West Indies in the format.

One century could make history for Rohit

A century in this series could carry additional significance.

At 39, Rohit could become the first player to score an ODI century in India at that age. A hundred could also make him the oldest ODI centurion against West Indies and give him another record among Indian openers facing the Caribbean side.

Rohit also remains within reach of several boundary-hitting landmarks.

He needs 18 fours to reach 2,000 fours across international cricket, while six sixes could take him to the record for most ODI sixes against West Indies.

If he manages 12 sixes across the series, Rohit could also become the first batter to register 100 international sixes against West Indies.

For a batter whose career has become synonymous with effortless six-hitting, that would be a particularly fitting addition to his record book.

Rohit and Kohli remain formidable against West Indies

The combined numbers explain why the return of the two veterans carries so much interest.

Kohli’s 2,261 ODI runs against West Indies and Rohit’s 1,613 place the pair among India’s most productive batters against the Caribbean side. Both currently sit ahead of Sachin Tendulkar among Indian ODI run-scorers against West Indies.

Their roles within the Indian side have changed considerably over the years.

Neither is captain anymore, with Shubman Gill now leading the ODI team. But their batting experience remains an important component of India’s 50-over plans as preparations gradually build towards the 2027 World Cup.

The ICC has itself described the West Indies assignment as part of India’s effort to build momentum towards the next men’s ODI World Cup.

India begin West Indies series on September 27

India have named a squad combining established stars with several newer faces.

Alongside Gill, Rahul, Rohit and Kohli, the batting options include Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Naman Dhir and Dhruv Jurel.

Nitish Kumar Reddy and Ravindra Jadeja provide all-round options, while the bowling group features Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar and Auqib Nabi.

The opening ODI in Thiruvananthapuram will therefore begin another important phase in India’s road towards 2027.

For fans, however, much of the attention will inevitably be directed towards two familiar figures.

Kohli needs only 59 runs for 15,000. Rohit needs 105 for 12,000.

With three matches against an opponent both men have historically enjoyed facing, the West Indies series could end with Indian cricket celebrating several new entries in the record books.
