Varun Chakaravarthy Injury Update: BCCI Reveals What Went Wrong During Afghanistan T20I, Asian Games Now in Doubt
Varun Chakaravarthy suffered sudden discomfort while bowling in the opening T20I against Afghanistan, with scans confirming a side strain that has ruled the India spinner out of the remainder of the series and raised fresh concerns over his availability for the Asian Games 2026.
Team India have suffered another injury setback, with mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy ruled out of the remaining T20I matches against Afghanistan after sustaining a fresh side strain.
The setback comes at a particularly difficult time for the 35-year-old, who had only recently returned to international cricket following rehabilitation for a hamstring injury suffered during India’s tour of England in July. His latest problem has also left his participation in the upcoming Asian Games in Japan uncertain.
What happened to Varun Chakaravarthy?
Chakaravarthy experienced discomfort while bowling during the first T20I against Afghanistan in New Delhi. Subsequent medical assessment confirmed a side strain, forcing the spinner out of the rest of the three-match series.
The injury was especially unexpected because Chakaravarthy completed his four overs in the series opener and produced an impressive spell. He returned figures of 1/16, helping India register a convincing seven-wicket victory.
Despite getting through his spell, the problem became serious enough for the team management to release him from the squad. He is expected to undergo further assessment under the medical team at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
Comeback cut short by another injury
The timing of the injury is frustrating for both Chakaravarthy and the Indian team.
The spinner had recently completed rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence after suffering a hamstring problem on the England tour. That injury had also kept him out of India’s T20I assignment against Zimbabwe in July.
His return against Afghanistan therefore represented an important step back into international cricket. But after only one match, another physical setback has interrupted his comeback.
Chakaravarthy had also dealt with injury trouble earlier in the year, making his latest setback particularly concerning as India enter another busy phase of their international calendar.
Chakaravarthy had spoken about the physical toll of injuries
Interestingly, following his return to action, Chakaravarthy had spoken about how injuries are an unavoidable part of professional sport and how athletes can sometimes push their bodies beyond their limits.
His comments now carry added significance after another injury forced him back onto the sidelines.
For Chakaravarthy, the immediate priority will be recovery rather than rushing another comeback, particularly with an important international tournament approaching.

Will Varun Chakaravarthy play at Asian Games 2026?
That is now the biggest question.
India’s cricket contingent is preparing to travel to Japan, with the Asian Games beginning on September 19. India are also scheduled to play a historic T20 match against Japan on September 22, before their Asian Games campaign gets underway later in the month.
With little recovery time available, Chakaravarthy’s participation is under serious doubt. Reports indicate that his condition will be assessed before a final decision is made regarding the Asian Games.
Losing Chakaravarthy would be a significant blow considering the variety and wicket-taking threat he provides in the middle overs.
India’s injury concerns continue

Chakaravarthy is not the only Indian player whose fitness has become a concern.
Pacer Harshit Rana failed to recover in time for the Afghanistan series and the Asian Games after initially being selected subject to fitness. Yash Thakur was subsequently named as his replacement.
Several other prominent Indian players, including Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar, have also recently worked their way back from injury setbacks.
For Chakaravarthy, however, the latest setback is particularly unfortunate. After spending weeks working his way back into the national side, his comeback lasted just one international appearance before another injury intervened.
The next medical assessment could now determine whether he can recover quickly enough to board the flight to Japan — or whether Team India will have to rethink their spin plans for the Asian Games.
