Rashmika Mandanna to Play MS Subbulakshmi in Biopic; ‘Absolute Honour’, First Look Coming on Singer’s 110th Birth Anniversary

Rashmika Mandanna is preparing to take on one of the most significant roles of her career, portraying legendary Carnatic vocalist MS Subbulakshmi in an upcoming biographical film.

The project was officially confirmed on Tuesday, September 15, putting an end to months of speculation over who would portray one of the most revered figures in Indian classical music. The film will be directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, while Anirudh Ravichander has been brought on board to compose the music.

Rashmika calls the role an ‘absolute honour’

Sharing the announcement on social media, Rashmika described being part of the project as an “absolute honour”. She teased the beginning of a journey centred on a legend whose music has lived across generations.

The makers are expected to unveil the film’s first look and further details on September 16, coinciding with MS Subbulakshmi’s 110th birth anniversary. The commemorative launch will also feature Kamal Haasan as chief guest.

The timing gives the announcement added significance. MS Subbulakshmi was born on September 16, 1916, in Madurai, and went on to become one of India’s most influential musical figures.

Gowtam Tinnanuri and Anirudh join the project

The biopic brings together an interesting creative combination.

Gowtam Tinnanuri, known for emotionally driven films including Jersey, will direct Rashmika in the challenging lead role. Meanwhile, Anirudh Ravichander will handle the music arguably one of the most closely watched aspects of a film built around the life of a celebrated vocalist.

The project is backed by producers Allu Aravind, Rockline Venkatesh and Bunny Vas, with Geetha Arts, Rockline Entertainments and BV Works associated with the production.

For Rashmika, portraying Subbulakshmi will demand more than physical resemblance. The performance will have to capture the singer’s grace, stage presence and extraordinary relationship with music across different phases of her life.

Who was MS Subbulakshmi?

Born Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi, the singer grew into a cultural icon whose influence stretched far beyond the traditional audience for Carnatic music.

Her performances helped introduce South Indian classical music to audiences across India and abroad. Among the landmark moments of her career was her historic performance at the United Nations in 1966.

Her renditions of devotional and classical compositions became deeply embedded in Indian musical culture, with her distinctive voice remaining familiar to generations of listeners.

She withdrew from public performances in the later years of her life and died on December 11, 2004, aged 88.

A major transformation for Rashmika

The film could offer audiences a markedly different side of Rashmika Mandanna.

Rather than relying on the scale and spectacle associated with many of her recent films, portraying Subbulakshmi will require restraint, musical authenticity and an ability to recreate the personality of a woman whose public image remains deeply respected.
