Nushrratt Bharuccha reveals the one detail she feared writing at auditions: ‘They would have rejected me…’

Behind the glamour of Bollywood lies an audition process where actors are often judged on far more than their acting ability. Nushrratt Bharuccha once spoke candidly about experiencing this reality herself, revealing how her height and body frame became a source of concern during the early stages of her career.

In a conversation with journalist Nayandeep Rakshit, Nushrratt recalled a time when actors appearing for auditions had to hold placards listing basic information such as their age, gender and height.

For Nushrratt, however, writing down one of those details came with a fear that she might be rejected before casting teams even gave her talent a chance.

‘If I’d written it, they would have rejected me’

Remembering her younger years, Nushrratt described herself as extremely thin and short, saying clothes would appear on her “like a hanger”.

She then revealed why mentioning her height during auditions made her uncomfortable.

“If I’d written it, they would have rejected me,” she recalled, explaining that she feared being told a girl of her height simply “wouldn’t work”, regardless of her talent.

The admission highlights an aspect of casting that rarely receives the same attention as conversations around acting ability the industry’s expectations surrounding an actor’s physical appearance.

For aspiring performers, requirements involving height, weight, complexion or body type can sometimes determine whether they are considered suitable for a role before their performance is properly evaluated.

When appearance becomes bigger than talent

Nushrratt’s experience raises a broader question about beauty and appearance standards in Bollywood.

Actors routinely transform themselves for characters, but the pressure to fit a predetermined image can begin much earlier sometimes from their very first audition.

For someone trying to establish a career, repeated comments about physical characteristics that cannot easily be changed can also affect confidence and self-perception.

Yet Nushrratt eventually managed to move beyond those early perceptions and carve out a place for herself in the Hindi film industry.

Why external validation can affect self-worth

The psychological impact of repeatedly being judged against external standards can extend beyond professional rejection.

Counselling psychologist Priyamvada Tendulkar has previously explained how insecurity can develop when individuals begin defining themselves primarily through their profession or the approval they receive from others.

When professional acceptance becomes closely connected to personal identity, rejection can begin to feel like a judgment of the individual rather than simply a decision about a particular job or opportunity.

One way to counter that pressure is to build a stronger sense of identity beyond professional success through personal interests, relationships, passions and goals that do not depend entirely on outside approval.

As Tendulkar puts it, “Ultimately, self-worth should come from within, not external comparisons.”

Nushrratt’s journey tells a different story

Nushrratt’s career ultimately offers an interesting contrast to the fears she carried during those early auditions.

The actress went on to establish herself through films such as Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Dream Girl, Chhorii and Janhit Mein Jaari, taking on roles across comedy, drama and horror.

Her journey serves as a reminder that the physical characteristic she once feared could close doors did not ultimately define how far she could go.

The actress’ recollection also leaves behind a larger question for the entertainment industry: how many talented performers never get their opportunity simply because they don’t match an outdated idea of what a star is supposed to look like?
