Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair the 31st meeting of the Southern Zonal Council in Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu, on August 20.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to chair the 31st meeting of the Southern Zonal Council in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, August 20, as the Centre and southern states prepare to discuss issues involving regional development, coordination and matters between governments.

According to an official government release, the meeting will be held at Mamallapuram, near Chennai. The Southern Zonal Council provides a platform for the Centre and member states and Union Territories to discuss common concerns and work towards resolving inter-state issues and disputes.

The meeting comes at a time when coordination between the Centre and states remains important on matters ranging from infrastructure and development to administrative and inter-state concerns.

Which states and UTs are part of the Southern Zonal Council?

The Southern Zonal Council comprises five states:

  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Karnataka
  • Kerala
  • Tamil Nadu
  • Telangana

Three Union Territories are also part of the council:

  • Puducherry
  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands
  • Lakshadweep

The council serves as a forum where representatives from these regions can raise issues requiring coordination with other states or the Union government.

According to the government information, the Union Home Minister is scheduled to arrive at around 7:45 PM before proceeding towards Kovalam, on the outskirts of Chennai, where the meeting is scheduled to take place.

The high-level gathering is expected to bring together senior representatives from the participating states and Union Territories.

Why is the Southern Zonal Council important?

Zonal councils were created to encourage greater cooperation between neighbouring states and strengthen coordination between the Centre and state governments.

Unlike political forums, these councils are designed to provide a structured platform for discussing practical administrative challenges and matters that affect more than one state.

Issues involving infrastructure, connectivity, water resources, inter-state coordination, security and development can require cooperation across state boundaries. The council provides a setting where such matters can be discussed collectively.

The government has described the Southern Zonal Council as an important forum for resolving issues and disputes between the Centre and its member states and Union Territories.

What to expect from Thursday’s meeting

While the detailed agenda for the meeting will determine the key issues under discussion, the gathering is expected to focus on matters requiring coordination among the southern states and the Union government.

With Amit Shah chairing the meeting, the discussions will also provide an opportunity for states to raise concerns and seek greater cooperation on issues that have regional implications.

The 31st meeting of the council therefore comes with a clear focus on strengthening Centre-state coordination and finding practical solutions to issues shared by the southern region.
