‘Buddhi-Shuddhi’ for Rahul Gandhi: BJP SC Morcha Performs Ritual as Kharge ‘Purification’ Row Explodes in Uttarakhand
The political battle over an alleged ‘shuddhikaran’ ritual following Mallikarjun Kharge’s Haldwani rally has intensified, with BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha members holding a ‘buddhi-shuddhi’ ritual for Rahul Gandhi in Dehradun, while Congress workers marched towards the Uttarakhand Secretariat in protest.
Haldwani ‘Shuddhikaran’ Controversy Takes a New Turn
The political confrontation surrounding an alleged ‘shuddhikaran’ or purification ritual at Haldwani’s Ramlila Ground has escalated sharply, with the BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha now performing a ‘buddhi-shuddhi’ ritual for Rahul Gandhi at the Panchayati Temple in Dehradun.
The symbolic protest came amid continuing demonstrations by the Congress, which has accused its political opponents of insulting party president Mallikarjun Kharge and giving the controversy a caste dimension.
The BJP has denied being behind the original ceremony.
The dispute began after allegations emerged that a ‘shuddhikaran yajna’ and havan had been performed at the Ramlila Ground following Kharge’s August 8 rally in Haldwani.
Since then, the controversy has grown from a local dispute into a wider political confrontation involving senior national leaders.
Congress Marches Towards Uttarakhand Secretariat
On Tuesday, Uttarakhand Congress president Ganesh Godiyal led a major protest march towards the state Secretariat in Dehradun.
He was accompanied by AICC co-in-charges Surendra Sharma and Manoj Yadav, along with hundreds of Congress workers.
The protesters attempted to gherao the Secretariat, prompting heavy police deployment. Several workers were detained as demonstrators raised slogans over the Haldwani episode.
Congress maintains that conducting a purification ceremony after a rally addressed by Kharge, a prominent Dalit leader, was deeply offensive and amounted to caste discrimination.
The party has demanded accountability from those responsible.
‘What Could Be More Shameless?’ Yashpal Arya Hits Out
Yashpal Arya, Leader of the Opposition in the Uttarakhand Assembly, launched a sharp attack over the incident.
“The rally happened in Haldwani, and then that place has a suddhikaran and havan,” Arya told ANI.
He further alleged that the BJP state president had justified the ceremony and accused the party of following an RSS agenda.
The BJP and organisers of the ceremony, however, have disputed the Congress interpretation of what happened.
Why Was the Ritual Held After Kharge’s Rally?
At the centre of the controversy is a fundamental disagreement over the reason for the havan.
Congress leaders allege that the ritual amounted to an attempt to “purify” the venue after it had been used for a political rally addressed by Kharge, and have framed the episode as an insult carrying caste implications.
The organisers, Shri Ram Sena, have rejected that allegation.
They maintain that the ceremony had nothing to do with Kharge’s caste and claimed it was conducted because the religious decorum associated with the Ramlila Ground had allegedly been violated.
Local BJP representatives have made similar arguments, while the party has denied organisational involvement in the ceremony itself.
Rahul Gandhi Faces FIR Amid Escalating Dispute
The controversy has also resulted in an FIR against Rahul Gandhi following a complaint from a member of the Scheduled Caste community.
According to the complaint, Gandhi’s comments regarding the purification controversy allegedly hurt the sentiments of the community.
The complainant maintained that members of the Valmiki community had participated in cleaning the venue and conducting the ritual following the Congress rally.
That has added another layer to an already complicated political dispute.
While Congress has presented the original ceremony as discriminatory, the complaint against Gandhi argues that his response itself caused offence to members of the Scheduled Caste community.
Congress Seeks Action Over Haldwani Incident
Before Tuesday’s Secretariat protest, Ganesh Godiyal, Surendra Sharma, Manoj Yadav and other Congress workers had reached Kotwali Police Station in Dehradun on Monday.
They sought the registration of an FIR against those they hold responsible for the Haldwani incident.
The party has continued to demand an investigation into who organised the ritual, why it was conducted and whether any political figures were associated with it.
The issue has also travelled beyond Uttarakhand, with Congress units in several states protesting against the alleged purification ceremony.
Rahul Gandhi and Owaisi Invoke ‘Manuvadi Mindset’
Both Rahul Gandhi and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi have criticised the incident and used the term “Manuvadi mindset” while reacting to the controversy.
Their criticism has further nationalised what initially began as a dispute surrounding one political rally in Haldwani.
Congress has sought to frame the controversy around the treatment of a Dalit political leader, while the BJP has accused its opponents of politicising the ceremony and misrepresenting its purpose.

JP Nadda Says BJP Had No Association With Organisers
Amid the escalating controversy, Union Minister and Leader of the House JP Nadda addressed the issue in Parliament.
Nadda condemned the act while maintaining that the BJP had no association with the organisers.
He also said the matter would be investigated.
That distinction has become central to the BJP’s defence: the party has sought to distance itself from responsibility for the ceremony even as Congress continues to target BJP leaders over their subsequent comments and reactions.
Now Comes the ‘Buddhi-Shuddhi’ Ritual for Rahul Gandhi

The BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha’s decision to conduct a ‘buddhi-shuddhi’ ritual for Rahul Gandhi has now added another provocative chapter to the controversy.
Instead of fading away, the political symbolism surrounding the original ritual has multiplied.
Congress workers are on the streets, an FIR has been registered against Gandhi, senior national leaders have entered the debate and both sides are accusing the other of insulting Scheduled Caste communities.
What began with a havan at Haldwani’s Ramlila Ground has therefore transformed into a much larger political battle over caste, dignity, religious symbolism and political responsibility.
And with neither the Congress nor the BJP showing signs of backing down, the biggest question now is whether the investigation can establish exactly who organised the original ‘shuddhikaran’ ceremony — and what was its actual purpose?
