Vijay’s TVK Enters West Bengal: First Office Opens in Purba Bardhaman… But Party Has a Different Plan for Bengal

Actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay is taking his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) beyond Tamil Nadu, with the party opening its first office in West Bengal.

The new office has been inaugurated in Purba Bardhaman district, marking the beginning of TVK’s formal organisational activity in the state.

The development is significant because Vijay is no longer simply a film star experimenting with politics. His party emerged as the single-largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, winning 108 of 234 seats, according to the Election Commission of India. TVK subsequently secured support from other parties to form the government.

Now, the party has begun building an organisational presence more than 1,500 kilometres away in Bengal.

Why Purba Bardhaman?

TVK’s first West Bengal office has been opened in the Fagupur locality of Purba Bardhaman.

Chaitali Roy, TVK’s West Bengal state coordinator, and other party functionaries were present during the inauguration.

The move formally begins the party’s organisational activity in the district, although its footprint across the wider region remains limited.

TVK is yet to establish a similar presence in neighbouring districts including Birbhum, Bankura and Purulia.

That suggests the Bengal expansion remains at an early stage rather than representing an immediate statewide political push.

TVK says politics isn’t its first priority in Bengal

Perhaps the most interesting part of the development is what TVK says it plans to do next.

Instead of immediately organising rallies or launching an electoral campaign, the party leadership says its initial priority will be social work and welfare activities.

The stated objective is to establish direct contact with ordinary people and gradually expand the organisation.

Roy said instructions from Tamil Nadu were to connect with people through welfare activities in states where new party organisations are being established.

That approach could allow TVK to test its organisational reach outside its home state without immediately committing itself to an electoral contest.

Bengal politics already underwent a major change in 2026

TVK’s arrival comes months after a significant change in West Bengal’s political landscape.

Election Commission results for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election show that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 207 seats, while the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) secured 80.

The Congress and Aam Janata Unnayan Party won two seats each, while the CPI(M) and AISF secured one seat each among the 293 constituencies for which results were listed.

The outcome transformed the balance of power in a state where the Trinamool Congress had governed for years.

It is against this changed political backdrop that TVK is beginning its Bengal organisation.

Vijay’s dramatic journey from cinema to government

TVK’s Bengal move is also notable because of the speed of Vijay’s political rise.

One of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, Vijay entered electoral politics through Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and led the party into the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election.

According to Election Commission results, TVK won 108 seats, comfortably finishing as the largest party but falling short of the 118 seats required for a simple majority in the 234-member Assembly.

The DMK won 59 seats, while the AIADMK secured 47.

TVK subsequently secured enough outside support to form the government, completing Vijay’s transition from superstar actor to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.

Is TVK planning a bigger national expansion?

Opening a single office does not by itself establish TVK as a major political force in West Bengal.

The party has not announced a broad Bengal electoral programme in connection with the office opening, and its leadership’s stated emphasis remains on welfare and organisational activities.

Still, the Purba Bardhaman office gives TVK something it did not previously have: a formal organisational foothold in West Bengal.

For a political party whose rise has so far been centred overwhelmingly on Tamil Nadu, that makes the development worth watching.

The immediate question is not whether TVK can replicate its Tamil Nadu performance in Bengal. The more relevant question for now is how far Vijay intends to expand the party’s organisation beyond his home state.

Purba Bardhaman may provide the first clue.
