‘Even a Z-Plus Protectee Isn’t Safe…’: Raghav Chadha Backs Ravneet Bittu After Alleged Convoy Attack in Punjab

BJP MP Raghav Chadha on Friday came out in support of former Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu after the senior BJP leader alleged that his convoy was attacked near Batala in Punjab while he was on his way to attend the party’s anti-drug campaign.

Reacting to the incident, Chadha targeted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and questioned the state of law and order in Punjab, arguing that if a politician protected by Z-plus security could face such an incident, the safety of ordinary citizens also required scrutiny. His remarks came after Bittu accused people associated with the ruling AAP of targeting his cavalcade — an allegation that AAP has denied.

“The AAP is scared; that is why they are attempting to attack our party member, Ravneet Singh Bittu,” Chadha alleged.

He further pointed to Bittu’s security cover, saying that even a former minister with Z-plus protection was vulnerable and claiming that the episode raised wider questions about public safety in Punjab. Chadha’s comments were political allegations made in response to Bittu’s account of the incident.

What happened to Ravneet Singh Bittu’s convoy?

The controversy began on Friday morning when Ravneet Singh Bittu was travelling from Amritsar towards Pathankot to attend the launch of the BJP’s Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra, an anti-drug campaign.

Bittu alleged that his cavalcade was targeted near Ghasitpura village, around eight kilometres from Batala on the Amritsar-Pathankot highway.

According to Bittu, a large group gathered near the route of his convoy and threw eggs, tomatoes and stones towards the vehicles. He also alleged that windows of escort vehicles were broken and a jammer vehicle was damaged during the confrontation.

Bittu claimed that those involved were linked to the Aam Aadmi Party. However, that allegation has not been independently established, and AAP denied involvement in the incident.

Bittu says he was forced to take shelter

Bittu also alleged that the situation became serious enough for his security personnel to move him into a nearby house.

According to his account, some members of the crowd were armed, prompting his security team to take additional precautions. Reports differed on the number of people apprehended at the scene: some accounts said two suspects were handed over to police, while others reported three people were detained by Bittu’s security team.

The BJP leader subsequently sought an investigation into the incident and raised questions about how those gathered along the route allegedly knew about his travel plans despite his high-level security cover.

‘How did they know my route?’ Bittu raises security questions

Bittu specifically questioned how the protesters allegedly obtained information about his movement.

The former Union minister said he was travelling with Z-plus security and claimed local police officials were also present in the area. He alleged that despite those security arrangements, his convoy was surrounded and vehicles were damaged.

Bittu also said he had informed Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Punjab DGP about the alleged security breach and sought legal action against those responsible.

Raghav Chadha and Bittu put past differences aside

Chadha’s support for Bittu is also notable given their earlier political exchanges.

Before Chadha’s move to the BJP, Bittu had publicly criticised him and made personal remarks about the Rajya Sabha MP. He later softened his position, explaining that his earlier comments about there being “no need” for Chadha to join the BJP were related to Chadha’s remaining Rajya Sabha tenure.

Friday’s incident, however, saw the two BJP leaders on the same side, with Chadha using Bittu’s allegations to question the AAP government’s handling of law and order in Punjab.

The alleged convoy attack has added another flashpoint to Punjab’s increasingly active political landscape ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, particularly as the BJP pushes its statewide anti-drug campaign.

The circumstances surrounding the confrontation and responsibility for it remain matters for investigation, while political accusations between the BJP and AAP continue.
