Rahul Gandhi-Savarkar defamation case takes a fresh turn as Satyaki Savarkar tells a Pune court that Nathuram and Gopal Godse were “active” RSS members.

The ongoing defamation case involving Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Satyaki Savarkar, a descendant of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, took a politically significant turn in Pune on Monday after the complainant made a notable admission during cross-examination.

While being questioned by Gandhi’s counsel Milind D. Pawar, Satyaki Savarkar told the court that Nathuram Godse and his brother Gopal Godse were “active members” of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The statement was made before Judicial Magistrate First Class Amol Shriram Shinde during proceedings in the defamation complaint filed against Rahul Gandhi.

According to the deposition reported from the proceedings, Satyaki agreed with the statement: “It is true to say that, my grandfathers Gopal Godse and Nathuram Godse were active members of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.”

The admission is significant because the relationship between Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, and the RSS has remained a subject of political and historical debate for decades. The RSS has consistently denied that Godse was a member at the time of Gandhi’s assassination and has maintained that he had left the organisation earlier. Historical accounts and statements attributed to Gopal Godse have, however, presented a different version.

Savarkar-Godse Family Connection Comes Under Spotlight

The cross-examination also brought the family relationship between the Savarkar and Godse families into focus.

Satyaki reportedly confirmed that Gopal Godse was his maternal grandfather and Sindhu Godse his maternal grandmother. He also identified Himani Savarkar as his mother and confirmed that Gopal and Nathuram Godse were brothers.

Nathuram Godse was described as Satyaki’s grand-uncle.

The witness further acknowledged that the Savarkar and Godse families were related and that his mother and Gopal Godse were associated with the Hindu Mahasabha until their deaths.

These details emerged as Gandhi’s defence team questioned Satyaki about the historical and family background relevant to the case.

Gandhi Assassination Also Discussed

The cross-examination also moved towards the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948.

Satyaki agreed that Gandhi was assassinated at Birla House in Delhi and that Gopal Godse and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar were accused in the case.

Nathuram Godse was convicted and executed for Gandhi’s assassination, while Savarkar was tried in the conspiracy case and acquitted for lack of sufficient evidence to convict him.

The defence also questioned Satyaki about an alleged interview given by Gopal Godse to a monthly publication in January 1994. Satyaki said he was unaware of the interview. He similarly said he did not know whether Nathuram Godse had worked as an “intellectual executive” in 1944.

Some of the questions concerning the RSS and Digambar Badge were opposed by complainant’s lawyer Sangram Kolhatkar, who argued that they were not relevant to the defamation proceedings.

The court recorded the objections and indicated that their relevance would be considered while delivering its final decision.

What Is the Rahul Gandhi-Savarkar Case About?

The Pune proceedings stem from a defamation complaint filed by Satyaki Savarkar over remarks Rahul Gandhi made about V.D. Savarkar during a speech in London in 2023.

Satyaki has alleged that Gandhi made statements about Savarkar that were false and defamatory. The case has since involved extensive arguments and cross-examination concerning Savarkar’s life, reputation, writings and historical associations.

A previous order in the case noted that the complaint relates specifically to Gandhi’s alleged defamatory speech in London and that the burden of proving the complaint rests with the complainant.

The latest admission, therefore, does not by itself decide whether Rahul Gandhi’s remarks were defamatory. That remains a matter for the court to determine based on the evidence and applicable law.

Hearing Adjourned

The cross-examination of Satyaki Savarkar was not completed on Monday.

The court has deferred the remaining questioning until September 1, meaning the latest development is unlikely to be the final word in the long-running legal battle.

For now, however, the courtroom exchange has injected a fresh and politically sensitive element into the proceedings.

The statement regarding the Godse brothers’ RSS membership is likely to attract considerable attention because it touches on one of the most contested historical issues surrounding the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi while the court’s eventual task remains much narrower: determining the legal merits of the defamation complaint against Rahul Gandhi.
