Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra shared emotional messages for their mother Sonia Gandhi ahead of the publication of her memoir ‘Belonging: A Journey of Love’.

For Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, their mother Sonia Gandhi’s upcoming memoir is not simply another political book. It is a deeply personal account of a woman whose life they have witnessed from a perspective few others ever could.

On Rajiv Gandhi’s 82nd birth anniversary, Rahul Gandhi shared an emotional message reflecting on his parents, his mother’s life after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination and the difficult journey that eventually brought Sonia into the centre of Indian public life.

Rahul recalled that the last time he saw his parents together was more than 35 years ago. He said that since his father’s death, he had watched his mother confront the challenges of life with what he described as “never-ending courage and dignity”.

The Congress leader also expressed his pride over Sonia Gandhi’s decision to tell her story through her memoir, ‘Belonging: A Journey of Love’.

For someone he described as deeply private, Rahul said writing such a personal account and sharing it with the world could not have been easy.

He also connected the occasion to his late father, saying he could imagine Rajiv Gandhi “smiling and looking down proudly” at Sonia.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Calls Her Parents’ Relationship a Great Love Story

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also posted an emotional tribute to her mother, offering a glimpse into Sonia Gandhi beyond her public and political identity.

Priyanka described her parents’ relationship as “one of the greatest love stories of our time”, adding that she felt privileged to have witnessed it closely.

She also celebrated Sonia for putting her story on paper with honesty and emotion.

For Priyanka, the memoir is an opportunity for readers to discover the woman behind the political figure — someone she describes as brave, loyal and compassionate, while also being tough and fun-loving.

Her message carried a distinctly personal tone, ending with an affectionate declaration to her mother and pride in the story she has chosen to share.

What Is Sonia Gandhi’s ‘Belonging: A Journey of Love’ About?

Titled ‘Belonging: A Journey of Love’, Sonia Gandhi’s memoir runs to 544 pages and is scheduled for international publication on November 10, 2026, by Alfred A. Knopf.

The book traces Sonia Gandhi’s journey from post-war Italy to India and recounts her meeting with Rajiv Gandhi in Cambridge before their marriage and her entry into the Nehru-Gandhi family.

But the memoir is also expected to explore the personal tragedies that transformed her life.

Among them are the assassinations of Indira Gandhi in 1984 and Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. These events had a profound impact on Sonia Gandhi and, according to the book’s description, eventually contributed to her entry into public life and politics.

The memoir also covers her years at the centre of the Indian National Congress, including her long tenure as Congress president and the controversial political moment when she chose not to become Prime Minister despite the Congress-led alliance emerging victorious in the 2004 general election.

A Political Story Told Through a Personal Lens

While Sonia Gandhi has spent decades as one of the most influential figures in Indian politics, her public image has often existed separately from her private life.

That makes ‘Belonging: A Journey of Love’ particularly significant.

For Rahul and Priyanka, however, the book appears to represent something even more intimate — their mother finally telling a story that they have lived alongside for decades.

And on Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary, their messages made that emotional connection impossible to miss.

A memoir about politics may be reaching readers soon, but for the Gandhi family, this is first and foremost the story of a mother, a wife and a life marked by love, loss and resilience.
