Imran Khan has spoken about separating criticism of elected politicians from love for the country amid his continued support for student protesters.

Mumbai: Bollywood actor Imran Khan has sparked a fresh discussion on democracy, political criticism and patriotism after arguing that questioning a political leader or government should not be equated with attacking the country.

The actor made the remarks during a recent interaction with the Yuvaa YouTube channel, where he spoke about the growing tendency to treat criticism of those in power as criticism of India itself.

Imran stressed that a politician is not the country and said citizens have every right to question elected representatives.“The important thing to note here is that critique of a political official is not critique of a country. In case it needs to be said, no politician is the country,” Imran said.

He further argued that citizens themselves are an integral part of the nation and that, in a democracy, people cannot be expected to prove their patriotism simply by agreeing with those in power.

‘You are a public servant. You are not the country’

Explaining his position, Imran said that elected representatives are public servants who have been chosen to perform a responsibility on behalf of citizens.“You are a public servant. You are an elected official. You have been selected by public demand to perform a task. You are not the country,” he said.

The actor also questioned the idea that people must constantly demonstrate their love for the nation by defending the government.

His comments were widely discussed online, with some social media users interpreting them as a criticism of the BJP and its leaders, while others praised the statement as a broader argument about democratic accountability.

One user described his remarks as a reflection of the “true definition of Democracy,” while another praised the actor for speaking out and commented, “Imran Khan Actor with Spine.”

Imran Khan’s support for student protesters

The latest remarks come days after Imran publicly backed the CJP-led student movement and participated in a protest march in Mumbai.

The actor had earlier condemned the police action against students during their march from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament. He expressed his anger over reports of lathi-charge and tear gas being used against protesters.

In an emotional social media post, Imran wrote that he was disturbed by seeing students who had worked hard being confronted by force while demanding that their concerns be heard.

He questioned whether the protesting students were not also “the children of Mother India”, and argued that their future should matter to those in authority.

Imran later took his support beyond social media by joining students during a protest march in Mumbai. Videos from the demonstration showed him walking alongside protesters, interacting with students and posing for photographs. India Today reported that the actor said he was there to support students whose hard work had been affected and described the movement as a fight for the future of the nation.

Actor also speaks about art and politics

Imran has also addressed the argument that artists should remain apolitical.

During the Mumbai protest, when he was asked about actors who believe that art should stay away from politics, he said that genuine art naturally contains the artist’s individual perspective.“True art is going to have an individual artist point of view embedded within it,” he said.

He added that artists should be able to stand by their opinions and put their perspective into their work. His comments were subsequently reported by several publications, including Hindustan Times and Outlook India.

A growing political conversation around Imran Khan

Imran’s recent public appearances mark a more outspoken phase for the actor, who has increasingly used his social media platforms to discuss education, accountability, student rights and political issues.

His participation in the Mumbai protest also placed him among several film personalities who publicly expressed solidarity with the student movement.

However, his latest comments about politicians and the country have generated a different kind of conversation. While some viewers see the remarks as a direct political criticism, the actor’s central argument was that love for India and criticism of its government can coexist.

For Imran, questioning an elected representative is not the same as questioning the nation itself.

And with his pointed line “No politician is the country” the actor has once again placed himself at the centre of a heated public debate over patriotism, democracy and the right to dissent.
