Rahul Gandhi Writes to Hemant Soren Over Jharkhand Student Protests: ‘Hear Them Out’ as Hunger Strike Continues
The Congress leader urged Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren to personally meet representatives of protesting students, calling their demands legitimate and emphasising the right to peaceful protest.
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has written to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren over the ongoing student protests in the state, urging him to personally meet representatives of the protesters and take steps to resolve their outstanding concerns.
In a letter dated August 14, Gandhi described the student movement as peaceful and said the protesters’ demands were legitimate. He also called for greater dialogue between the Jharkhand government and the students as the agitation continues.
The Congress is part of the JMM-led ruling alliance in Jharkhand.
Rahul Gandhi asks Hemant Soren to meet students
Gandhi said that young people represent India’s future and argued that political leaders have a responsibility to stand with them during moments of crisis.
In his letter, he emphasised the constitutional importance of peaceful protest and pointed to recent student demonstrations over alleged paper leaks and irregularities in the education system.“The Congress party believes that the right to peaceful protest as enshrined in the Constitution of India is one of the central pillars of our democracy.”
Gandhi said the party had extended its support to students protesting alleged problems within the education system over recent months.
He also made a sharp political criticism of the RSS and BJP, alleging that the education system had been transformed into a tool for the exploitation and oppression of students.
Government has already opened dialogue
The Congress leader acknowledged that the Jharkhand government had already taken steps to engage with the protesting students.
According to Gandhi, the state government has initiated dialogue through a committee constituted by Soren and there is reportedly agreement on several demands raised by the protesters.
However, he noted that the demonstrations have continued and that some students remain on an indefinite hunger strike.

This, Gandhi argued, makes further direct engagement necessary.
‘Please do your utmost to hear them out’
Gandhi specifically asked Soren to personally meet representatives of the protesting students.
He argued that a direct meeting would demonstrate the government’s commitment to addressing the remaining concerns and could help move the discussions towards a resolution.“I am writing to suggest that you personally meet with representatives of the protesting students.”
He further urged the Jharkhand Chief Minister to listen to the students and take appropriate action.“Please do your utmost to hear them out and take appropriate action towards the resolution of this issue.”

The appeal comes as pressure continues to build around the student protests, with the hunger strike adding urgency to the dispute.
A political message within the alliance
Gandhi’s intervention is also significant because the Congress and JMM are partners in the Jharkhand government.
While the letter calls for action by the state government, it also signals the Congress leadership’s public position on the student movement.
Gandhi’s emphasis on peaceful protest and dialogue places the focus on resolving the issue through engagement rather than confrontation.
For the protesting students, the key question now is whether Soren will accept Gandhi’s suggestion and hold a direct meeting with their representatives.
With some protesters continuing their hunger strike, the next round of government-student dialogue could prove crucial in determining whether the ongoing agitation can finally be brought to an end.
