Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet has approved five major infrastructure projects worth Rs 13,041 crore, including four railway projects and a four-lane highway in Bihar.

The Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet has cleared five major infrastructure projects with a combined investment of Rs 13,041 crore, giving a fresh push to railway capacity, road connectivity and logistics infrastructure across several parts of the country.

The decisions were announced on Wednesday by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who said the Cabinet had approved five significant projects aimed at improving connectivity and supporting economic activity.

Of the five projects, four are railway projects, while the fifth involves the construction of a four-lane highway in Bihar connecting Muzaffarpur with the Nepal border.

The projects are expected to benefit regions including Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, while also strengthening important national transport corridors.

Howrah-Chennai railway route set for major expansion

One of the key approvals involves the Howrah-Chennai railway route, one of India’s important rail corridors.

The government has approved the quadrupling of the railway line on the route to improve capacity and make train movement smoother and more efficient.

The corridor plays an important role in connecting eastern and southern India, carrying both passenger and freight traffic. Additional railway lines are expected to help ease congestion and allow more trains to operate on the network.

For the broader logistics system, improving capacity on such a major route could also help strengthen the movement of goods between industrial and commercial centres.

Cuttack-Paradip rail connectivity to get a boost

The Cabinet has also approved the construction of third and fourth railway lines between Cuttack and Paradip in Odisha.

The expansion is aimed at increasing the capacity of the existing railway network, allowing it to handle additional passenger and freight traffic.

The Cuttack-Paradip corridor is particularly important because Paradip is a major port, making efficient rail connectivity crucial for the movement of cargo.

The additional lines are therefore expected to strengthen both passenger connectivity and freight movement in the region.

Four railway projects aligned with PM-Gati Shakti

The four approved railway projects have been planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.

The programme focuses on integrated infrastructure planning and improving multimodal connectivity by bringing different transport networks together.

For the railway projects, the broader objective is to improve capacity, strengthen logistics efficiency and support smoother movement of passengers and goods.

The government has been increasingly focusing on infrastructure projects that connect railways, highways, ports and other transport systems rather than treating each network independently.

Bihar gets a major highway project towards Nepal border

The fifth approval is a major road infrastructure project in Bihar, with the government clearing the four-laning of the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa section of NH-22.

The project covers approximately 82.578 km and has been approved at a total cost of Rs 3,590.73 crore.

The upgraded road will provide a four-lane connection from Muzaffarpur through Sitamarhi to Sonbarsa, close to the India-Nepal border.

The project is strategically important because the Sonbarsa border is connected to economic centres such as Muzaffarpur through the wider national highway network.

Which areas in Bihar are expected to benefit?

According to the Cabinet’s announcement, the highway upgrade is expected to reduce congestion in several densely populated locations along the corridor.

These include Muzaffarpur, Muksudpur, Runni Saidpur, Thumma, Dumra, Bhutahi and Sonbarsa.

Improved road capacity could help make travel faster while supporting the movement of commercial vehicles and goods towards the India-Nepal border.

The project could also strengthen connectivity between local economic centres and larger national transport corridors.

A combined infrastructure push

Taken together, the five projects represent a significant infrastructure investment across multiple transport networks.

The railway expansions are aimed at increasing capacity on important passenger and freight corridors, while the Bihar highway project focuses on improving border connectivity and easing congestion.

The Rs 13,041 crore investment also reflects the government’s broader emphasis on infrastructure-led development, with transportation networks playing a central role in supporting trade, logistics and regional economic activity.

As these projects move towards implementation, their eventual impact will depend on execution timelines, land and construction requirements and how effectively the upgraded corridors integrate with existing transport infrastructure.

For now, the Cabinet approvals mark another major step in expanding India’s rail and road network across strategically important regions.
