Elon Musk is adding over $800 million a day… so how did the world’s richest man’s fortune grow this fast?
Elon Musk’s estimated wealth jumped by hundreds of billions of dollars over the past year, with Tesla and SpaceX valuations playing a major role in the extraordinary rise.
Elon Musk is already the world’s richest person, but the speed at which his fortune has grown is perhaps even more astonishing.
According to wealth estimates cited in recent reports, Musk’s net worth stood at around $725.1 billion in July 2026, compared with approximately $405.6 billion a year earlier. That represents an increase of roughly $319.5 billion over the period.
Spread across an entire year, the increase works out to an average of approximately $875 million per day.
Of course, that does not mean Musk receives $875 million in salary or cash every day. The calculation reflects the changing value of assets and company stakes he owns, particularly his interests in SpaceX and Tesla.
Musk’s fortune can change dramatically in days
The latest numbers also highlight just how volatile billionaire wealth can be.
Musk’s fortune is heavily linked to the market value of the companies he owns. When their shares rise, his estimated net worth can jump by billions of dollars without him actually selling those holdings.
The reverse is equally true.
A decline in Tesla or SpaceX’s valuation can wipe billions off his estimated fortune almost instantly.
That was particularly visible after SpaceX became a publicly traded company in June.
SpaceX IPO changed the wealth equation
SpaceX’s stock-market debut created a historic moment for Musk.
The company began trading on the Nasdaq in June 2026, with shares opening at $150 after being priced at $135. The stock surged during its first trading session and eventually closed at $160.95.
Forbes estimated that Musk’s fortune reached approximately $1.1 trillion following the IPO, making him the world’s first trillionaire.
The milestone was driven largely by the enormous valuation assigned to SpaceX by public markets.
But Musk’s trillionaire status did not remain fixed.
As SpaceX’s share price moved lower after the initial excitement, his estimated wealth fell sharply. Forbes’ real-time profile showed Musk at approximately $725.1 billion as of July 27, 2026, illustrating how quickly the figure can change.
Why SpaceX matters so much to Musk
Musk’s exposure to SpaceX is enormous.
Forbes estimates that he owns around 38% of SpaceX, including options. That means even relatively small movements in the company’s market value can have a huge impact on his personal fortune.
SpaceX’s market performance has therefore become one of the most important variables in the billionaire’s wealth calculations.
Recent trading has remained volatile. SpaceX shares climbed sharply in early August, with reports noting a 16% rise on Friday followed by another gain on Monday. The stock’s three-day rally pushed the cumulative increase to more than 25%.

Tesla remains another major pillar
SpaceX is not Musk’s only source of enormous paper wealth.
His stake in Tesla also plays a major role in determining his net worth. Forbes estimates that Musk owns nearly 11% of Tesla, excluding certain unvested shares linked to his compensation arrangements.
That means movements in Tesla’s share price can also translate into significant changes in Musk’s estimated fortune.
For investors watching the world’s richest person, the daily net-worth number is therefore less about how much money Musk has sitting in a bank account and more about the constantly changing value of his ownership stakes.

The trillionaire milestone came — and then disappeared
Musk’s journey in 2026 has been particularly unusual.
In June, he became the world’s first trillionaire, at least according to Forbes’ estimate following SpaceX’s public-market debut. The company was valued at nearly $2 trillion when trading began, while its shares eventually closed at $160.95 on the first day.
Just weeks later, the estimated value of his fortune had fallen below the trillion-dollar threshold.
That does not necessarily represent a conventional loss of cash. Instead, it reflects changes in the market value assigned to the companies in which Musk owns large stakes.
So, is Musk really making $875 million every day?
Not literally.
The $875 million-per-day figure is an average increase in estimated net worth, calculated over the period covered by the wealth comparison.
Musk does not receive that amount as a daily paycheck.
His wealth can rise or fall by billions of dollars depending on stock prices, company valuations and other asset movements. On some days, the increase could be far higher; on others, his fortune could shrink.
Still, the underlying number remains extraordinary.
Adding roughly $319.5 billion to an estimated fortune over a year would make Musk’s wealth growth larger than the total wealth of many of the world’s richest individuals.
For now, Musk remains firmly at the top of the global wealth rankings, but his 2026 journey also demonstrates an important reality about modern billionaire fortunes: when most of your wealth is tied to company ownership, being the richest person in the world can also mean watching your fortune swing by billions from one trading session to the next.
Note: Net-worth figures are estimates and can vary between wealth trackers and change rapidly with market prices. They should not be interpreted as Musk’s daily salary or cash income.
