‘The Odyssey’ Makes Box Office History… Christopher Nolan’s Epic Beats ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ With $1.352 Billion Worldwide

Christopher Nolan has another historic box office record to his name.

His epic adventure The Odyssey has reportedly crossed $1.352 billion at the worldwide box office, surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated film in history.

According to figures reported by Variety, the Nolan directorial has now earned approximately $1.352 billion (around Rs 12,949 crore) globally. The previous record belonged to the 2024 Marvel blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, which concluded its theatrical run with approximately $1.338 billion (around Rs 12,814 crore) worldwide.

That puts The Odyssey roughly $14 million ahead of the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-starrer — and its theatrical journey isn’t over yet.

‘The Odyssey’ Dethrones Deadpool & Wolverine

Released in cinemas on July 17, The Odyssey arrived with enormous expectations, driven by Nolan’s reputation, a massive ensemble cast and the scale of his adaptation of Homer’s legendary Greek epic.

The film reportedly opened with an impressive $123 million domestically before continuing to attract audiences over the following weeks.

Its total collection in North America has reached approximately $516 million, while international territories have contributed around $835 million.

Together, those numbers have pushed the movie past the $1.35 billion worldwide mark and into R-rated box office history.

Ryan Reynolds Reacts After Losing the Record

Interestingly, Ryan Reynolds didn’t let the changing of the guard pass without acknowledging Nolan’s achievement.

The Deadpool & Wolverine star congratulated the cast and crew of The Odyssey on social media after the film surpassed his blockbuster.

“Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. That is one helluva car,” Reynolds wrote.

His reaction quickly attracted attention among movie fans, particularly after Deadpool & Wolverine had held the R-rated worldwide record since its blockbuster run in 2024.

Christopher Nolan Breaks His Own Career Record

Becoming the biggest R-rated film ever isn’t the only major achievement for The Odyssey.

The epic recently also became the highest-grossing film of Christopher Nolan’s career, adding another blockbuster to a filmography that already includes The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk and Oppenheimer.

The success is particularly significant because Nolan has once again demonstrated that a director-driven theatrical event can compete at the very top of the global box office.

The enormous cast has been one of the film’s biggest attractions, combining established Hollywood stars with actors from several generations.

Inspired by Homer’s ancient Greek poem, The Odyssey follows King Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon, and his dangerous journey home following the Trojan War.

Waiting for him at home is his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, while Tom Holland portrays his son, Telemachus.
