‘Stick to Commentary’: Kris Srikkanth Rejects Eoin Morgan for CSK Coach… Backs This Franchise Favourite Instead

Former India opener Kris Srikkanth has strongly opposed the idea of Eoin Morgan or Brendon McCullum succeeding Stephen Fleming as Chennai Super Kings head coach, instead backing long-time CSK figure Michael Hussey for the crucial role.

Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth has rejected Eoin Morgan and Brendon McCullum as potential replacements for Stephen Fleming, instead backing Michael Hussey to become CSK’s next head coach.

The search for Chennai Super Kings’ next head coach has suddenly become one of the biggest talking points ahead of the IPL 2027 season.

After Stephen Fleming’s 18-year association with CSK came to an end, the five-time IPL champions face the difficult task of finding a successor capable of guiding the franchise into a new era. Fleming had been CSK’s head coach since 2009 after representing the franchise as a player in the inaugural 2008 season.

Several high-profile names have entered the conversation, including former England captain Eoin Morgan and current England coach Brendon McCullum.

However, former India opener Kris Srikkanth has made it clear that neither would be his preferred choice.

Instead, the former India cricketer believes CSK already have the ideal candidate inside their own dressing room.

‘Stick to Commentary’ — Srikkanth’s Strong Message for Morgan

Morgan’s possible appointment has generated plenty of attention because of his reputation as one of the sharpest cricketing minds of the modern era.

The former England captain famously led his country to the 2019 ODI World Cup title, transforming England’s approach to white-ball cricket.

Yet Srikkanth is not convinced that Morgan’s success as a player and captain necessarily makes him the right person to coach CSK.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth acknowledged Morgan’s qualities as a player and England captain but questioned his credentials for the CSK coaching position.

It’ll be best if he just sticks to commentary,” Srikkanth said while rejecting Morgan as his preferred option.

Srikkanth also pointed towards Morgan’s spell with Kolkata Knight Riders, arguing that his record as KKR captain did not convince him that the former England skipper should be handed the CSK job.

Ravichandran Ashwin Had Suggested Morgan Could Be in the Race

Interestingly, the discussion surrounding Morgan gained momentum after former CSK spinner Ravichandran Ashwin suggested that the England great’s name was being seriously discussed.

Ashwin said he had a feeling that Morgan could be coming to CSK, adding that his name was doing the rounds and that early discussions were taking place.

Morgan would certainly represent a fascinating change of direction for CSK.

He has extensive leadership experience and is widely respected for the aggressive cricketing philosophy that helped England become one of the strongest white-ball sides in world cricket.

But there is one major question: Morgan has not previously coached an IPL team.

For a franchise entering its first major coaching transition in nearly two decades, that lack of experience appears to be enough for Srikkanth to look elsewhere.

Srikkanth Doesn’t Want Brendon McCullum Either

Morgan was not the only major international name rejected by Srikkanth.

The former India batter also advised CSK against appointing Brendon McCullum.

Unlike Morgan, McCullum does have experience as an IPL coach. The former New Zealand captain coached Kolkata Knight Riders between 2020 and 2022, helping the franchise reach the IPL 2021 final. Morgan, incidentally, captained KKR during that campaign.

McCullum has subsequently built a significant reputation as an international coach with England.

Despite those credentials, Srikkanth believes CSK should say “no” to both Morgan and McCullum.

So, if not two of the biggest cricketing minds of their generation, who should replace Fleming?

Srikkanth has a very familiar name in mind.

Michael Hussey Should Be the ‘Automatic’ Choice, Says Srikkanth

Srikkanth has thrown his support firmly behind former Australian batter Michael Hussey.

Hussey is hardly an outsider at CSK.

Known throughout his playing career as “Mr Cricket,” the Australian became an important member of the Chennai franchise during his IPL career and has subsequently worked within CSK’s coaching setup as batting coach.

For Srikkanth, that familiarity makes him the obvious candidate.

Michael Hussey should be the automatic head coach. He will be the best choice,” Srikkanth said.

His argument is straightforward: why search outside the franchise when CSK already have someone who understands its players, culture and expectations?

That philosophy would also fit CSK’s historically stable approach to team management.

Why Michael Hussey Could Make Sense for CSK

Replacing Stephen Fleming is not like filling an ordinary coaching vacancy.

Fleming and MS Dhoni created one of the longest and most successful captain-coach partnerships in franchise cricket.

Under Fleming, CSK developed a reputation for backing experienced players, maintaining a stable core and avoiding unnecessary changes even after disappointing seasons.

Whoever replaces him will inherit not just a cricket team but a deeply established CSK culture.

That is where Hussey’s existing relationship with the franchise could prove valuable.

He already understands the environment, has worked with several members of the squad and would not require the same adjustment period as an external appointment.

However, Srikkanth believes there is another question CSK must answer first.

What Happens With MS Dhoni?

Before deciding on Fleming’s successor, Srikkanth believes MS Dhoni’s future role at CSK needs to be clearly defined.

The former India captain has been the face of the franchise for virtually its entire existence, and his influence extends far beyond what happens on the field.

Srikkanth argued that CSK must first determine Dhoni’s place in the franchise going forward, after which the rest of the coaching structure can fall into place.

It is a significant point.

A new head coach would be stepping into an organisation where Dhoni remains one of the most influential personalities. Defining the responsibilities of both figures could therefore be crucial to ensuring a smooth transition.

CSK Face One of Their Biggest Decisions in Years

For years, CSK represented continuity in an IPL landscape famous for constant change.

Players came and went, squads were rebuilt and rivals repeatedly changed captains and coaches — but Fleming and Dhoni remained at the heart of Chennai’s system.

That stability is now being tested.

Names such as Eoin Morgan and Brendon McCullum bring international stature and bold cricketing philosophies. Michael Hussey, meanwhile, represents familiarity, continuity and an intimate understanding of how CSK operates.

Srikkanth has made his preference unmistakably clear.

He doesn’t want Morgan. He doesn’t want McCullum.

For him, CSK’s answer may have been sitting inside their own coaching staff all along: Michael Hussey.

Now the biggest question is whether Chennai Super Kings’ management agrees.
