Mahershala Ali says Marvel Studios' long-delayed Blade reboot is no longer happening, confirming he has officially moved on from the project.

After years of speculation and repeated production setbacks, Mahershala Ali has confirmed that Marvel Studios long-delayed Blade reboot is no longer moving forward.

The two-time Academy Award winner revealed that he has officially moved on from the project, saying the film simply wasn’t meant to happen despite years of development.

Speaking about the cancelled reboot, Ali said he has accepted that some projects never materialise, regardless of the excitement surrounding them.

“They Didn’t Want to Do It”

In an interview with IGN, Ali reflected on the fate of the superhero film while discussing his upcoming movie, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.”If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on,” the actor said.

Ali added that after nearly three decades in the film industry, he has learned that not every project reaches the finish line.

According to the actor, he now prefers to focus on opportunities that are actively moving forward rather than waiting indefinitely for uncertain productions.

Years of Development Never Led to Production

Marvel Studios first announced the Blade reboot during San Diego Comic-Con 2019, introducing Mahershala Ali as the new vampire hunter following Wesley Snipes’ iconic portrayal.

However, the project soon encountered repeated delays.

Over the years, the film reportedly went through:

  • Multiple screenplay rewrites
  • Changes in directors
  • Several creative overhauls
  • Different story concepts, including a version set in the 1920s

Despite years of work, production never officially began before the project was eventually shelved.

Kevin Feige Admitted Marvel Couldn’t Crack the Story

Earlier, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige acknowledged that the studio struggled to find the right creative direction for Blade.

Feige admitted Marvel was unwilling to move forward without confidence in the script, saying the studio did not want to compromise either the character or Mahershala Ali.

His comments suggested that creative concerns ultimately became the biggest obstacle to bringing the reboot to theatres.

Training Wasn’t Wasted

Although the film never happened, Ali said the extensive martial arts and physical training he underwent for Blade proved valuable.

He explained that those skills helped him prepare for his latest film, giving him a sense of creative satisfaction despite the cancellation.

The actor also indicated that he is ready to stop discussing the cancelled Marvel project, believing any remaining questions should now be directed at the studio.

Other Cast Members Also Prepared for the Film

Actress Mia Goth, who was attached to one version of the reboot, previously revealed that she had already completed chemistry tests with Ali along with costume and wig fittings before that iteration of the project was abandoned.

Reports also suggested that costumes created for supporting artists were later repurposed for another vampire-themed production after Blade was shelved.

Meanwhile, David S. Goyer, who wrote and directed entries in the original Blade trilogy starring Wesley Snipes, previously admitted he was surprised by how long the reboot remained stuck in development.

What’s Next for Blade?

Although the standalone Blade reboot has reportedly been abandoned, the character’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) remains uncertain.

Fans continue to speculate that Blade could eventually appear in a future Midnight Sons project, especially as Marvel expands its supernatural corner of the MCU.

Recent reports linking Ryan Gosling to a future Ghost Rider project have only fuelled speculation that Marvel still has long-term plans involving supernatural heroes. However, the studio has not officially announced any new Blade project.

For now, Mahershala Ali has closed the chapter on one of Marvel’s most anticipated but ultimately unrealised films.
