Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Series Coming Soon: 2nm Chip, Nearly 5GHz Speed and a ‘Pro’ Surprise Phones That Could Get It First

Qualcomm is preparing for its next big leap in flagship smartphone performance. The upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series is expected to bring more than the usual annual performance upgrade, with reports suggesting that Qualcomm could introduce two flagship variants this time.

The lineup is tipped to consist of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and a more powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. While the standard processor could find its way into mainstream premium smartphones, the Pro version is expected to target ultra-premium devices with faster graphics, improved memory support and potentially higher CPU speeds.

Qualcomm has not confirmed most of these specifications yet, so details surrounding the new processors should be treated as leaks and early reports until the company makes its official announcement.

Snapdragon Summit 2026 dates revealed

The spotlight will be on Maui, Hawaii, where Qualcomm is scheduled to hold its Snapdragon Summit 2026 from September 22 to September 24.

The annual event traditionally serves as the stage for Qualcomm’s major platform announcements. The company has teased two upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite chips, although their final commercial names and complete specifications have not yet been disclosed.

If the reported naming scheme proves accurate, Qualcomm could use the two-chip strategy to create a clearer performance gap between conventional flagship phones and more expensive Pro or Ultra models.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 vs Gen 6 Pro: What could change?

Leaks suggest the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 could carry the model number SM8950, while the more powerful Gen 6 Pro could be identified as SM8975.

The biggest change, however, could be hidden deep inside the silicon.

Both processors are tipped to be manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process, marking a move from the 3nm technology used for the previous generation. A smaller manufacturing process could potentially help Qualcomm improve both performance and power efficiency, although real-world gains will depend on the final chip design and individual smartphone implementations.

Qualcomm has yet to officially confirm the reported 2nm manufacturing process.

New Oryon CPU cores could approach 5GHz

Another major upgrade could arrive with Qualcomm’s next generation of Oryon CPU cores.

Reports suggest both processors may use a 2+3+3 CPU configuration, consisting of two prime cores, three performance cores and three efficiency cores.

More interestingly, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro has reportedly been tested at clock speeds approaching the 5GHz mark.

That would represent an eye-catching milestone for a smartphone processor, but testing frequencies do not necessarily reflect the clocks that will appear in commercially available devices. Qualcomm could adjust them before launch to balance performance, heat and battery consumption.

Adreno 850 GPU reserved for Pro?

Graphics could be another important difference between the two processors.

The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is tipped to feature an Adreno 845 GPU with 12MB of graphics memory, while the Gen 6 Pro could move to an Adreno 850 GPU with 18MB.

The Pro processor is also rumoured to support more advanced AI-assisted graphics, potentially including technologies such as frame generation and upscaling.

Such features could be particularly useful for high-end mobile gaming, allowing compatible smartphones to deliver smoother gameplay or improved visuals without relying entirely on raw GPU performance.

However, these graphics specifications and features remain unconfirmed.

LPDDR6 RAM could be another major upgrade

Qualcomm could also create a significant difference between the two chips through memory support.

The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is expected to work with LPDDR5X RAM, while the Pro model is tipped to introduce support for newer LPDDR6 memory. Reports suggest the Pro chip may retain LPDDR5X compatibility as well.

Both processors are also tipped to support UFS 5.0 storage.

If manufacturers adopt the newer technologies, future flagship phones could benefit from faster memory and storage performance, particularly during demanding gaming, AI processing and large file transfers.

Xiaomi 18 series could be among the first

The first smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family could arrive shortly after Qualcomm’s September announcement.

Xiaomi is tipped to be among the earliest adopters. The upcoming Xiaomi 18 and Xiaomi 18 Pro could reportedly use the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, while higher-end models in the family may receive the more powerful Pro processor.

The exact configurations have not been officially announced by Xiaomi.

Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra could get the Pro chip

Samsung is another major manufacturer expected to adopt Qualcomm’s new platform.

Reports suggest the upcoming Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra could feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.

The Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+, meanwhile, could use either Snapdragon processors or Samsung’s own Exynos 2700, depending on the region.

This would continue Samsung’s long-running strategy of using different processors across markets, although the company has not yet confirmed its Galaxy S27 chipset plans.

OnePlus 16, iQOO and Oppo also in the race

The upcoming OnePlus 16 is also tipped to use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, potentially positioning it among the first high-performance Android flagships based on Qualcomm’s new platform.

iQOO and Oppo are reportedly developing premium smartphones using the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family as well. Details about which variant each manufacturer intends to use remain unclear.

With the Snapdragon Summit 2026 only weeks away, the picture should become much clearer soon. If the leaks prove accurate, the combination of 2nm manufacturing, next-generation Oryon cores, improved Adreno graphics, LPDDR6 RAM and potentially near-5GHz CPU speeds could make the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro one of Qualcomm’s most ambitious mobile processors yet.

Until Qualcomm formally reveals the platform, however, the reported specifications and smartphone compatibility remain unofficial.
