iQOO 16 appears on Geekbench with mysterious Snapdragon chip but why are its scores lower than iQOO 15?

The alleged iQOO 16 has appeared on Geekbench with a mysterious Qualcomm chipset believed to be the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, alongside 16GB RAM and Android 17.

iQOO may still be keeping quiet about its next flagship, but an alleged iQOO 16 has now appeared on Geekbench, revealing what could be our first indication of its performance.

An unannounced iQOO smartphone carrying model number V2606A has surfaced on the benchmarking platform. Previous reports have linked that model number with the upcoming iQOO 16.

The listing is particularly interesting because the device appears to be powered by a chipset that is not yet commercially available and its specifications closely resemble Qualcomm’s rumoured Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.

If the information proves accurate, iQOO could once again be preparing to put Qualcomm’s latest flagship silicon at the centre of its next premium smartphone.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro spotted?

The Geekbench listing describes an octa-core processor based on ARM architecture with an unusual CPU configuration.

It reportedly includes two cores clocked at up to 5.01GHz, three cores running at 4.03GHz, and another three operating at 3.74GHz.

The chipset carries the identifier QTI SM8975.

No currently available Qualcomm mobile processor matches this configuration, strengthening speculation that the device is testing the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.

However, Qualcomm has not officially announced the chipset, so its final branding and specifications remain unconfirmed.

5.01GHz on a smartphone?

Perhaps the most eye-catching number in the listing is the 5.01GHz peak clock speed.

Crossing the 5GHz barrier would represent an aggressive push for mobile CPU performance, particularly in demanding tasks such as gaming, video processing and AI workloads.

Clock speed alone, however, does not determine real-world performance.

Thermal management, power efficiency, memory bandwidth, software optimisation and sustained performance will all influence how fast the final iQOO 16 actually feels.

And the first benchmark result demonstrates exactly why early specifications should be interpreted carefully.

iQOO 16 Geekbench scores revealed

In Geekbench 6.7.1 for Android AArch64, the alleged iQOO 16 recorded:

Single-core: 3,434 points

Multi-core: 9,334 points

Those are powerful results, but there is a surprise.

They are actually lower than benchmark figures recorded for the previous-generation iQOO 15 in independent testing.

The iQOO 15, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, previously achieved around 3,647 points in single-core and 10,206 points in multi-core testing.

On paper, that means this particular iQOO 16 benchmark run trails its predecessor.

Why could iQOO 16 be slower than iQOO 15?

That does not necessarily mean the new Snapdragon processor is slower.

Pre-release smartphones commonly appear on benchmarking platforms while running unfinished firmware, engineering configurations or early power-management profiles.

Manufacturers may also deliberately restrict performance during development while engineers work on thermals and battery efficiency.

Individual Geekbench runs can additionally vary depending on device temperature, background processes and software configuration.

Therefore, the 3,434/9,334 result should not be treated as representative of the final retail iQOO 16.

Later test units could deliver significantly different results once hardware and software optimisation is complete.

16GB RAM also appears in listing

The alleged flagship was detected with approximately 14.87GB of usable memory, strongly suggesting it is equipped with 16GB RAM.

That would be unsurprising for an iQOO flagship.

The company’s premium smartphones are heavily focused on performance and gaming, making large memory configurations increasingly important for multitasking, demanding games and AI-powered applications.

Other RAM and storage options could also be offered when the device officially launches.

Android 17 and OriginOS 7 expected

The Geekbench entry lists the smartphone as running Android 17.

In China, the iQOO 16 could consequently ship with the next major version of Vivo’s software platform, widely expected to be called OriginOS 7.

Software optimisation could prove especially important this generation if Qualcomm’s next flagship processor really does push CPU frequencies beyond 5GHz.

Balancing that performance with battery consumption and thermal management will be one of the biggest challenges for manufacturers adopting the new chip.

China could get iQOO 16 first

The iQOO 16 is widely expected to debut in China before reaching global markets, following the brand’s familiar flagship launch strategy.

iQOO has not yet officially announced the smartphone, meaning a confirmed launch date, price and complete specification sheet are still unavailable.

The Geekbench appearance nevertheless suggests that development and testing of the device are already well underway.

Should you trust these benchmark numbers?

For now, the Geekbench listing is best viewed as an early glimpse rather than a final performance verdict.

The mysterious SM8975 chipset, unusual 5.01GHz clock speed, 16GB RAM and Android 17 make the listing particularly intriguing.

But the lower benchmark score compared with the iQOO 15 demonstrates why pre-launch results can be misleading.

If the processor really is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, more benchmark appearances will likely surface as Qualcomm and smartphone manufacturers move closer to commercial launch.

Until then, the biggest mystery surrounding the iQOO 16 is not whether it will be powerful it is how much faster that 5.01GHz flagship chip can become once the final software is ready.
