‘Matter Is Not Closed’: Centre Summons Meta Over PM Modi Post Removal, Company Expresses Regret

The Central Government has called upon Meta‘s senior leadership to provide a detailed explanation after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post on strict action against examination paper leaks was briefly removed from the platform.

Speaking on Thursday, IT Secretary S. Krishnan said the government’s concerns had not been fully addressed by Meta’s initial response, prompting officials to seek clarifications directly from the company’s top leadership.

Centre Seeks Explanation From Meta

Addressing the issue, S. Krishnan said the government wants both policy-level and technical clarity regarding the incident.

According to him, Meta has agreed to meet government officials at the highest level to explain how the removal occurred and what measures are being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Krishnan said the government expects a comprehensive explanation covering the company’s content moderation policies, technical systems and safeguards relating to prominent public accounts.

Meta Expresses Regret

The IT Secretary confirmed that Meta has formally written to the government expressing regret over the incident.

According to Krishnan, the company has explained the reasons behind the temporary removal and informed the Centre that, from July 28, it has introduced new protocols specifically for accounts belonging to prominent public figures.

The company believes these additional safeguards will help prevent similar errors in the future.

What Happened?

The controversy began after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post discussing strict action against examination paper leaks was briefly restricted on the platform.

The post, which had originally been uploaded on Instagram before being shared on Facebook, featured the Prime Minister’s first direct selfie video addressing India’s youth.

The incident occurred while Parliament was debating legislation aimed at introducing stricter punishment for examination paper leaks.

The post was later restored.

Meta Blames Technical Error

Meta subsequently apologised to the government, stating that the removal resulted from a technical mistake involving its AI-powered automated content moderation system.

According to government sources, the company explained that its automated systems were reviewing multiple shared versions of the Prime Minister’s post circulating on Facebook when the original post was mistakenly restricted.

Meta admitted that the removal was unintentional and assured authorities that corrective measures had already been implemented.

Government Says Inquiry Continues

Despite Meta’s apology and explanation, the Centre has indicated that the issue remains under examination.

Officials have emphasised that the government wants a complete understanding of both the policy framework and technical processes that led to the incident before considering the matter resolved.

The upcoming meeting between Meta’s senior leadership and government officials is expected to focus on preventing similar mistakes involving accounts of constitutional authorities and other prominent public figures in the future.
