Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath face a closely contested political landscape in UP, with the August 2026 Mood of the Nation survey projecting 41 Lok Sabha seats for the INDIA bloc against 38 for the NDA.

Uttar Pradesh, the state that sends the largest number of MPs to the Lok Sabha, could once again become the toughest electoral battleground for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). A fresh Mood of the Nation (MOTN) survey suggests that if a general election were held today, the INDIA bloc would hold a narrow advantage over the ruling alliance in the politically crucial state.

According to the August 2026 Mood of the Nation survey, the INDIA bloc is projected to secure 41 of Uttar Pradesh’s 80 Lok Sabha seats, while the NDA is estimated to win 38 seats. The remaining one seat is projected to go to a party or candidate outside the two major alliances.

The numbers are particularly significant because Uttar Pradesh has long been central to the BJP’s national electoral strategy. With 80 parliamentary constituencies, even a relatively small swing in the state can have a substantial impact on the overall composition of the Lok Sabha.

Big reversal from January 2026

What makes the latest projection more striking is the scale of the change in just a few months.

In the January 2026 MOTN survey, the NDA was projected to win 48 seats in Uttar Pradesh, compared with just 31 seats for the INDIA bloc. The latest August numbers turn that advantage around.

The NDA’s projected tally has fallen by 10 seats, from 48 to 38, while the INDIA bloc has gained 10, moving from 31 to 41.

That represents a 20-seat swing between the two alliances when their respective changes are viewed together — a notable shift in a state where every seat carries considerable political weight.

How does it compare with the 2024 Lok Sabha election?

Interestingly, the latest survey does not suggest that the INDIA bloc would improve on its actual performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

In 2024, the opposition alliance won 43 seats in Uttar Pradesh, while the NDA secured 36. The August 2026 projection puts the INDIA bloc at 41 and the NDA at 38.

In other words, compared with the actual 2024 election result, the INDIA bloc would lose two seats, while the NDA would gain two.

The bigger political story, therefore, is not necessarily a dramatic improvement for the opposition over 2024. Instead, it is the reversal from the commanding advantage that the NDA appeared to have regained in the January 2026 survey.

Why Uttar Pradesh remains crucial for BJP

For the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Uttar Pradesh has been one of the foundations of its national electoral strength during the Narendra Modi era.

The party’s performance in the state, however, took a major hit during the 2024 general election, when the BJP won 33 seats, down sharply from the 62 seats it had secured in 2019.

That result demonstrated how quickly changes in Uttar Pradesh’s political arithmetic can influence the broader national picture.

The latest survey numbers could therefore attract attention within both camps. For the BJP and its NDA partners, they indicate that the state remains highly competitive. For the opposition, the projection suggests that the political ground gained during the 2024 election has not disappeared.

Akhilesh-Rahul partnership remains important

The political equation in Uttar Pradesh has also been shaped by the partnership between Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress, which played a significant role in the INDIA bloc’s strong 2024 performance.

Ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, the opposition has continued efforts to build coordination around issues including governance, employment, education and youth concerns.

Whether that cooperation translates into similar results in a future Lok Sabha election remains uncertain, but the latest MOTN numbers suggest the contest between the two alliances could remain extremely close.

What the Mood of the Nation survey says — and what it doesn’t

The Mood of the Nation is a bi-annual opinion survey commissioned by the India Today Group. The August 2026 edition was conducted by CVoter, with 25,184 respondents directly surveyed between July 1 and August 25. The findings also incorporated 91,795 interviews conducted during the previous six months as part of CVoter’s regular tracking exercise.

Like any opinion poll, however, the projection represents voter sentiment during a particular period rather than an election result.

Political alliances, candidates, campaigns and major events can all alter voter preferences before an actual election.

Still, one message from the latest numbers is difficult to ignore: Uttar Pradesh remains wide open.

After the January survey appeared to show the NDA rebuilding a comfortable lead, the August projection has once again placed the INDIA bloc narrowly ahead. In India’s biggest electoral state, the political battle appears far from settled.
