BMW has officially teased the next-generation X5 Neue Klasse SUV ahead of its much-awaited global debut, giving enthusiasts a glimpse of what could be one of the most technologically advanced luxury SUVs in the brand’s history.

The German automaker has already confirmed that the upcoming BMW X5 will be its first production model to offer five different powertrain technologies a major step in BMW’s future mobility strategy.

This means buyers will have more choices than ever before.

The lineup will include traditional petrol and diesel engines paired with 48V mild-hybrid technology, alongside plug-in hybrid variants, a fully electric BMW iX5, and the brand’s first mass-produced hydrogen-powered SUV, the iX5 Hydrogen, which is expected to arrive in 2028.

At the heart of the all-electric BMW iX5 will be the company’s advanced sixth-generation eDrive technology, making its debut with this new-generation model.

The SUV will also introduce an all-new 800V electrical architecture, promising significantly faster charging speeds and improved energy efficiency compared to current EV systems.

BMW says the iX5 60 xDrive will carry its largest battery pack ever, offering a usable capacity of 144kWh for the US market and 141kWh for Europe.

This large battery, paired with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, is expected to deliver strong performance, quicker acceleration, and improved traction through BMW’s well-known xDrive system.

The next-gen X5 will also showcase several key innovations built around BMW’s Neue Klasse platform.

One of the standout features is the new ‘Heart of Joy’ control system, supported by BMW Dynamic Performance Control software.

According to the company, this integrated system can process vehicle inputs up to ten times faster than previous-generation systems, controlling everything from steering and braking to charging and regenerative braking in real time.

For electric and hydrogen versions, this means smoother braking transitions and better energy recovery, while combustion and plug-in hybrid variants will benefit from sharper traction control and improved stability.

BMW has also focused heavily on ride comfort and handling.

The SUV will feature electronically controlled adaptive suspension as standard, along with BMW’s near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution, a hallmark of the brand’s driving philosophy.

For those seeking even more comfort and precision, BMW will offer Adaptive Chassis Control Professional on electric and plug-in hybrid versions.

This package adds two-axle air suspension, electronically controlled dampers, Integral Active Steering, and active roll stabilisation, promising a sharper and more comfortable driving experience.

Safety technology has also taken a big leap.

The new X5 will come loaded with intelligent driver assistance systems, including an upgraded Lane Keeping Assistant, Lane Change Warning, Side Collision Warning, Crossing Traffic Alert, and automatic emergency braking for turns and parking exits.

These systems are designed to work silently in the background, enhancing safety without interfering with the driver’s natural control.

Perhaps the most futuristic part of BMW’s plan is the iX5 Hydrogen.

Set to enter production in 2028, it will combine a third-generation hydrogen fuel cell system with a newly developed Hydrogen Flat Storage system.

This setup uses seven carbon fibre-reinforced high-pressure hydrogen tanks, carefully integrated into the vehicle’s structure to maximize space efficiency while maintaining cabin practicality.

BMW says this modular design will allow hydrogen-powered models to be built on the same production line as petrol, hybrid, and electric versions a major advantage for manufacturing flexibility.

With the next-gen X5, BMW appears ready to redefine the luxury SUV space by combining traditional performance with future-ready electrification and hydrogen technology.

As the official debut nears, the X5 Neue Klasse is shaping up to be one of BMW’s most important launches of the decade.
