The wait for Kia Sorento in India is finally nearing its end. Kia has confirmed that its premium three-row SUV will make its Indian debut on September 4, 2026, bringing hybrid technology to the brand’s SUV line-up in the country.

The launch is significant for Kia beyond simply adding another large SUV to its portfolio. The Sorento is expected to become Kia India’s first hybrid SUV, giving the company a new entry point into a premium segment where buyers are increasingly looking beyond conventional petrol and diesel powertrains.

A hybrid Sorento for India

Internationally, the Sorento Hybrid is offered with a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with an electric motor. Reports indicate that the hybrid system produces around 227hp and more than 350Nm in global specifications, although Kia is yet to disclose every detail of the India-specification model.

That distinction matters because the Indian version could receive market-specific changes. Kia has not yet announced the complete India-spec powertrain and variant line-up, so buyers will have to wait until the official launch for final specifications.

The Sorento will sit above Kia’s existing mainstream SUV offerings and is expected to target customers looking for a spacious, technology-rich three-row vehicle without moving into the luxury-car territory.

Premium features on the cards

The Sorento’s international positioning gives a good indication of what Indian buyers could expect. The SUV is expected to feature a premium cabin with dual 12.3-inch displays, ventilated front seats and a panoramic sunroof, while advanced driver-assistance technology is also likely to be part of the equipment package.

Kia has traditionally used technology and features as major selling points in India, and the Sorento appears to follow the same formula. A combination of connected-car functions, advanced safety systems and a three-row cabin could help the SUV stand apart in an increasingly crowded premium-SUV market.

However, Kia has not yet confirmed which features will be standard across variants and which will be restricted to higher trims.

Kodiaq and Tayron face a new rival

The Sorento is entering a segment that already has some strong names. Its most direct premium monocoque SUV rivals are expected to include the Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron.

The SUV could also attract buyers considering the Toyota Fortuner and MG’s large SUVs, although those models use a different approach, particularly in terms of body construction and off-road positioning.

For Kia, the challenge will be to convince buyers that a premium hybrid three-row SUV offers enough advantages in comfort, technology and efficiency to justify its expected positioning.

India production could be another advantage

The Sorento is also expected to be assembled locally at Kia’s manufacturing facility in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, a move that could play an important role in determining its eventual pricing and positioning.

Kia has not officially announced the final price yet. Industry estimates have placed the SUV in the premium ₹35 lakh-plus territory, with some reports expecting a price around ₹40-45 lakh, depending on the level of localisation and variant structure.

September 4 could mark a new chapter for Kia

The Sorento’s arrival comes at a time when India’s premium SUV market is becoming increasingly diverse. Buyers now have more choices between traditional diesel SUVs, petrol-powered monocoque models, hybrids and electric vehicles.

That makes the Sorento an important product for Kia. It is not merely another seven-seater; it represents the company’s first major step into the hybrid SUV space in India.

With its three-row layout, premium equipment and hybrid powertrain, the Sorento will have plenty to prove when it officially arrives on September 4. The biggest question now is not whether Kia can create attention around the SUV — it is whether the final price and India-specific specifications will make buyers choose it over the established names already occupying their shortlist.
