BMW Unveils New X5 and iX5 Long-Wheelbase SUVs: More Rear Space, Premium Comfort, But There’s a Catch
BMW has introduced stretched versions of the X5 and all-electric iX5 with a longer wheelbase, enhanced rear-seat comfort, and updated technology—though the luxury SUVs are currently exclusive to China.
New Delhi: BMW has officially revealed the long-wheelbase (LWB) versions of its popular X5 luxury SUV and the all-electric iX5, introducing more rear-seat space and additional premium features. Designed specifically for the Chinese market, the new models aim to cater to buyers who prioritize comfort in the second row, a growing trend in China’s luxury vehicle segment.
While the stretched SUVs offer a more spacious cabin and upgraded technology, BMW has confirmed that the new X5 LWB and iX5 LWB are currently exclusive to China, with no plans to launch them in India or other global markets.
Longer Wheelbase, Bigger Focus on Passenger Comfort
The biggest update to both SUVs is the 130 mm increase in wheelbase, with most of the additional length dedicated to enhancing rear passenger legroom.
Rather than increasing cargo space, BMW has focused on creating a more luxurious and relaxing experience for occupants seated in the second row. This makes the SUVs particularly attractive for customers who prefer chauffeur-driven travel.
The exterior design remains largely familiar, with the extended wheelbase being most noticeable when viewed from the side. BMW has also introduced new alloy wheel designs and subtle styling tweaks tailored specifically for the Chinese market.
Premium Cabin Gets Modern Technology
Inside, the updated BMW X5 LWB and iX5 LWB receive several technology upgrades alongside their more spacious interiors.
Key highlights expected in the cabin include:

- Updated connected-car technology

Powertrain Options
Mechanically, the BMW X5 Long Wheelbase will continue to be offered with petrol engine options, depending on the chosen variant.
Meanwhile, the BMW iX5 LWB remains a fully electric SUV powered by BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology.
One of its biggest highlights is the claimed driving range of more than 1,000 km (CLTC cycle), making it one of BMW’s most ambitious electric SUV offerings. While complete technical specifications are yet to be announced, BMW says both models will retain the performance and driving dynamics of their standard-wheelbase counterparts.
The updates primarily focus on comfort and practicality rather than outright performance improvements.
Built Exclusively for China
Both SUVs will be manufactured by BMW Brilliance Automotive, BMW’s joint venture in China.
The company has made it clear that these long-wheelbase models have been developed specifically for Chinese customers, where demand for luxury vehicles with enhanced rear-seat comfort continues to grow.
Will India Get the X5 LWB?
At present, BMW has not announced any plans to introduce the X5 Long Wheelbase or iX5 Long Wheelbase in India.
However, long-wheelbase luxury vehicles have enjoyed strong demand in the Indian market, particularly in premium sedan segments. This has sparked speculation that BMW could eventually consider extending the strategy to its SUV portfolio if customer demand grows.
Until then, the standard BMW X5 will continue to serve as the brand’s flagship luxury SUV offering in India.
