New York: In a significant shift in its artificial intelligence strategy, Disney is reportedly moving away from Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot in the United States and adopting OpenAI’s Codex as its primary AI coding assistant. The reported decision comes at a time when competition among AI-powered developer tools is intensifying, posing a fresh challenge for Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

According to a report by Business Insider, the change will take effect from August and applies only to Disney’s US operations. The company will continue to provide developers with access to Anthropic’s Claude Enterprise and Cursor, while also discontinuing two AI tools from Amazon—the Kiro code editor and Amazon Q assistant.

Why Disney Is Moving Away from GitHub Copilot

The report cites feedback from several Disney technology employees who reportedly found limited value in GitHub Copilot.

Some engineers claimed they rarely used the tool, while others said it often generated unnecessarily complex code that required additional editing before deployment. One employee reportedly noted that their Copilot access had expired simply because they were not using it.

The reported dissatisfaction also follows Microsoft’s recent decision to introduce a token-based pricing model for GitHub Copilot, a move that generated mixed reactions within the developer community.

Despite the criticism, Microsoft has stated that GitHub experienced one of its strongest months following the pricing changes.

Claude and Cursor Gain Popularity

According to the report, Claude Enterprise and Cursor have become the preferred AI coding tools for many Disney software engineers.

Some developers reportedly rely on Claude extensively during daily coding sessions, with one senior engineer estimating that the majority of terminal-based coding assistance now comes from Anthropic’s AI models.

Disney has also reportedly introduced internal dashboards to monitor AI adoption and encourage teams to integrate AI tools more effectively into software development workflows.

Microsoft Faces Growing Competition

The reported move highlights the increasingly competitive landscape for AI-assisted software development.

Microsoft has invested heavily in expanding GitHub Copilot and strengthening its AI ecosystem, but rivals including OpenAI and Anthropic continue to gain momentum with developers seeking alternative coding assistants.

Industry analysts believe developer preference is becoming an important factor in determining which AI platforms achieve long-term adoption within enterprise environments.

Cloud Infrastructure Demands Continue to Rise

Beyond software competition, Microsoft is also managing rapidly increasing demand for AI computing infrastructure.

According to reports, the company plans to spend approximately $190 billion on AI infrastructure while also exploring additional cloud capacity from competitors including Amazon and Google.

Reports suggest Microsoft has been evaluating external infrastructure providers to support growing AI workloads after facing server capacity constraints. The company is also said to have explored infrastructure partnerships with Oracle, although those discussions reportedly did not move forward due to security and compliance considerations.

An Intensifying AI Race

Disney’s reported decision illustrates how quickly enterprise AI preferences are evolving. As businesses evaluate AI tools based on productivity, usability, and cost, major technology companies are competing aggressively to secure long-term enterprise customers.

While Microsoft remains one of the world’s largest AI investors, the reported shift by Disney demonstrates that the battle for dominance in AI-powered coding assistants is far from settled.Note: The reported changes are based on information published by Business Insider. Neither Microsoft nor Disney has publicly issued a detailed statement confirming all aspects of the reported transition.
