‘Dario dug his own grave…’: Elon Musk slams Anthropic CEO over ‘terrifying’ Mythos AI, makes bold prediction on software jobs

Elon Musk has taken aim at Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, accusing him of creating unnecessary fear around the company’s upcoming AI model, Mythos, while simultaneously planning to release it.

Speaking in an interview with The Economist, Musk said Amodei’s public comments about the capabilities and risks of Mythos sent mixed signals that naturally made people anxious about artificial intelligence.”Dario did dig his own grave here regarding Mythos because he said, ‘Mythos is super scary, terrifying, also by the way, we’re going to release it,'” Musk remarked during the conversation.

According to Musk, warning the public that an AI system is extremely dangerous before making it available is bound to fuel concern.”If you terrify everyone and then say, ‘We’re releasing this terrifying thing,’ people will obviously be alarmed about that. That is natural,” he added.

The remarks came after the interviewer referenced surveys indicating that a significant number of Americans are worried about the rapid advancement of AI technologies.

Musk predicts AI will dominate digital jobs

Beyond his criticism of Anthropic’s messaging, Musk also shared his outlook on the future of employment in the age of artificial intelligence.

Responding to Amodei’s prediction that AI could eventually take over a large share of engineering work, Musk said the transformation would likely be disruptive but inevitable.

He argued that AI is advancing rapidly enough to outperform humans in almost every digital profession, especially jobs that involve working on computers or smartphones.

According to Musk, software engineering is already witnessing this shift.

He claimed current AI systems can outperform at least 90% of professional software engineers in writing software and suggested that figure could soon exceed 99%, making it increasingly difficult for humans to compete in routine coding tasks.

The ‘Stockfish level’ comparison

To explain his point, Musk compared the future of AI coding assistants to Stockfish, one of the world’s strongest chess engines.

He said Stockfish has become so powerful that it can comfortably defeat even world-class chess players, including Magnus Carlsen, despite running on relatively modest hardware.

Musk believes AI will eventually reach a similar level in software development—becoming so capable that human programmers will struggle to match its speed, accuracy, and efficiency.

Musk’s latest comments add to the growing debate over how quickly artificial intelligence will reshape industries and whether companies should focus more on highlighting AI’s benefits or warning about its potential risks.
