Xiaomi Launches First Power Bank Under China's New Safety Standard with 20,000mAh Battery
Xiaomi's new 20,000mAh power bank is the company's first portable charger designed to comply with China's upcoming national battery safety standard.

Xiaomi has taken an early step toward the future of portable charging by unveiling its first power bank designed to comply with China’s newly introduced national safety standards for portable chargers. The new Xiaomi Power Bank 20000 22.5W is scheduled to go on sale in China on July 22, carrying a price tag of 149 yuan (around $22).

The launch comes well ahead of the country’s mandatory implementation deadline, highlighting Xiaomi’s focus on improving battery safety as governments and manufacturers place greater emphasis on reducing battery-related risks.

Built with safety at its core

Unlike many conventional power banks, Xiaomi’s latest offering has been engineered to pass a series of rigorous safety evaluations. The company says the device has successfully cleared demanding tests designed to simulate real-world abuse and extreme conditions.

Among the evaluations are a 4mm needle penetration test, 135°C high-temperature exposure, overcharge testing, a compression test involving nearly 1.3 tonnes of pressure, and a 300-cycle ageing test that checks for lithium plating—one of the factors associated with battery degradation and internal short circuits.

Instead of relying on a single battery pack, the power bank uses two 10,000mAh battery cells, delivering a combined 20,000mAh capacity while supporting 22.5W fast charging through its built-in charging cable.

Smart features beyond charging

The device isn’t just about battery capacity. Xiaomi has integrated intelligent battery management features that allow users to monitor battery health and access traceability information related to the battery pack inside the device.

Connectivity options include:

  • One USB-A port
  • Two USB-C ports
  • Built-in charging cable with 22.5W output

The design is based on the Xiaomi 20000 22.5W Power Bank 2026, introduced earlier this year, but now incorporates hardware and software improvements aimed at meeting the country’s stricter compliance requirements.

China introduced its revised national safety standard for portable power banks in April 2026, with full enforcement scheduled from April 1, 2027.

The updated framework introduces significantly stricter regulations for manufacturers. It requires better resistance to heat, crushing, overcharging and impact while also introducing new battery ageing tests designed to reduce the risk of failures after repeated charging cycles.

The regulations also prohibit the use of recycled or refurbished lithium cells and require every power bank to carry a unique identification code, enabling consumers to verify information such as battery manufacturer details and product traceability.

Another notable addition is mandatory storage of diagnostic data related to unusual battery events, helping improve product monitoring throughout its lifecycle.

Industry moving ahead of the deadline

The new safety framework was developed with contributions from several leading technology companies, including Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Anker.

Although manufacturers have nearly a year before compliance becomes mandatory, Xiaomi’s latest launch suggests that major brands are already adapting their product lines to meet the stricter requirements well in advance.

As portable charging devices become an everyday necessity for smartphone, tablet and laptop users, stronger safety measures are expected to become a key selling point alongside battery capacity and charging speed.
