Airtel’s Unlimited 5G Under Fire? Viral Hotspot Claim Leaves Users Asking: ‘Is It Really Unlimited?’
A screenshot allegedly showing restrictions on hotspot sharing with Airtel’s Unlimited 5G plans has sparked debate online, although the telecom operator has not officially confirmed any such policy on its current terms page.
New Delhi: A fresh controversy has erupted around Bharti Airtel after a viral screenshot circulating on social media claimed that the company’s Unlimited 5G plans do not allow customers to share unlimited data via a mobile hotspot.
The screenshot, widely shared on X (formerly Twitter), triggered strong reactions from users who rely on their smartphones to provide internet access to laptops, tablets and other devices.
However, as of now, Airtel has not officially announced such a restriction, and the company’s currently available terms and conditions do not explicitly mention a ban on hotspot usage for Unlimited 5G data.
What the Viral Screenshot Claims
According to the screenshot circulating online, Airtel’s policy allegedly stated:
“Sharing of Data where the customer has activated the Unlimited 5G Data shall not be allowed via mobile hotspots.”
If such a condition were to apply, customers using their phone as a hotspot would consume data from their regular daily quota instead of receiving unlimited 5G benefits.
The authenticity and current applicability of the screenshot, however, have not been independently confirmed.

Users Express Concern
The alleged restriction quickly became a talking point among Airtel subscribers.
Several users argued that mobile hotspots are essential for professionals, students and travellers who frequently connect laptops to their phones while working remotely.
Some even claimed they were considering switching to Reliance Jio if hotspot access on unlimited plans were restricted.
Others described the reported limitation as inconvenient, saying that unlimited data should remain unlimited regardless of whether it is consumed directly on the phone or shared with another personal device.

How Can Telecom Companies Detect Hotspot Usage?
The discussion also raised questions about how telecom operators can determine whether customers are sharing internet through a hotspot.
While Airtel has not disclosed any detection methods, telecom networks generally have multiple technical mechanisms that can identify tethering activity.
Industry experts note that operators may analyse factors such as:
- Time-to-Live (TTL) values in internet packets
- TCP/IP fingerprinting, which helps identify different operating systems
- HTTP User-Agent information
- Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) in certain network environments
These technologies can help distinguish traffic generated by a smartphone from traffic originating on connected devices such as laptops or tablets.
Airtel’s Existing Data Policy
Even under Airtel’s Unlimited 5G offering, users are already subject to certain fair usage conditions.
The telecom operator currently applies a 300GB monthly usage limit for Unlimited 5G benefits under eligible plans. Once this threshold is reached, additional usage may be governed by the applicable plan conditions.
How Do Jio and Vi Compare?
Competing telecom operators currently appear to follow different approaches.
According to publicly available terms, Reliance Jio’s eligible True 5G plans allow customers to use unlimited 5G data through mobile hotspot sharing without specifically mentioning hotspot restrictions.
Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea (Vi) also does not publicly list hotspot limitations for its Unlimited 5G service, although it specifies a 300GB fair usage limit during a 28-day validity period.
No Official Clarification Yet
As online discussions continue, Airtel has not issued an official statement confirming or denying the claims made in the viral screenshot.
Until the company provides further clarification, customers are advised to rely on Airtel’s official website and app for the latest terms and conditions applicable to their mobile plans.
