Pakistan Hit by Another Earthquake in 24 Hours: 5.4-Magnitude Tremor Raises Fresh Concerns After Friday’s Quake
A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan on Saturday, just hours after a 5.3-magnitude tremor, keeping residents on edge as seismic activity continues to intensify across several parts of the world.
Islamabad: Pakistan was jolted by another earthquake on Saturday, as a 5.4-magnitude tremor struck the country only hours after a similar seismic event was recorded on Friday evening. The back-to-back earthquakes have renewed concerns among residents and disaster management authorities in one of the world’s most seismically active regions.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the latest earthquake measured 5.4 on the Richter scale and originated at a depth of 35 kilometres (22 miles) beneath the Earth’s surface. No immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage were available at the time of writing, but authorities continue to monitor the situation.
The fresh tremor follows a 5.3-magnitude earthquake that shook Pakistan on Friday evening, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The occurrence of two moderate earthquakes within such a short span has heightened fears of possible aftershocks in vulnerable regions.
Why Pakistan Frequently Experiences Earthquakes
Pakistan lies along the collision zone of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it one of the most earthquake-prone nations in the world. The constant movement of these massive plates generates seismic pressure, which is periodically released through earthquakes.

Several regions remain particularly vulnerable due to their proximity to active fault lines. Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan are among the most earthquake-sensitive areas, while provinces such as Punjab and Sindh also face seismic risks because they lie near the northwestern edge of the Indian Plate.
Experts have long warned that moderate earthquakes in the region serve as reminders of the need for strong infrastructure, disaster preparedness and public awareness.

Global Seismic Activity Remains High
The latest earthquake in Pakistan comes at a time when several countries are witnessing increased seismic activity.
Earlier this week, Venezuela experienced devastating earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5, followed by another 4.9-magnitude tremor off its northern coast. The powerful quakes triggered widespread destruction, with buildings collapsing in Caracas and nearby regions. Authorities reported that the confirmed death toll had climbed to 920, while 3,360 people were injured and more than 50,000 individuals remained missing as rescue operations continued.
Meanwhile, the Philippines also experienced significant seismic activity after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the southern island of Mindanao on Friday. The latest tremor followed a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake earlier this month that left nearly 50 people dead and caused extensive damage across affected communities.
Authorities Continue Monitoring
While Pakistan has not reported major damage from the latest earthquakes, officials continue to monitor the situation closely. Emergency agencies remain on alert, particularly in high-risk regions, as experts caution that aftershocks may occur following consecutive seismic events.
The recent earthquakes serve as another reminder of the importance of preparedness in countries located along active tectonic boundaries, where even moderate tremors can have serious consequences depending on their depth, location and population density.
