According to reporting by The Daily Beast, Dennis Kirk, who has been associated with the conservative Project 2025 blueprint, is expected to be nominated to lead the Interior Department’s Office of Inspector General. That office could have a role in examining issues involving the department, including questions surrounding the troubled Reflecting Pool project.

The development has prompted sharp criticism from Democrats and government watchdog groups, who argue that putting a Trump ally in a position overseeing potential investigations could raise questions about the independence of the watchdog.

What went wrong with the Reflecting Pool?

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool renovation has become a particularly visible problem for the Trump administration.

The approximately $16 million refurbishment project was intended to improve the iconic Washington, DC landmark. Instead, the pool attracted attention after its water reportedly turned green and sections of its lining developed problems.

Trump has faced criticism over the project, with opponents pointing to the deterioration as another example of controversy surrounding his plans for Washington’s monuments and federal properties.

According to The Daily Beast, Trump blamed the damage on vandalism. However, the report said a prosecutor appointed by Trump was unable to bring charges and the focus subsequently shifted towards the Interior Department, which had responsibility for the refurbishment.

Who is Dennis Kirk?

The controversy has intensified because of Dennis Kirk’s connection to Project 2025.

Project 2025 was developed by the Heritage Foundation and other conservative organisations as a detailed policy blueprint for a potential second Trump administration during the 2024 presidential campaign.

Huffman described Kirk as a “fake and fraudulent watchdog”, arguing that someone involved in developing Project 2025 should not be placed in a position responsible for independently investigating the administration.

Huffman also accused Kirk of being politically aligned with Trump and argued that his appointment could undermine the independence of the Interior Department’s oversight function.

The congressman’s comments reflect the Democratic opposition to the nomination and do not, by themselves, establish that Kirk would act improperly if appointed.

Watchdog groups raise concerns

Aaron Weiss, executive director of the Center for Western Priorities, has raised concerns about the state of oversight at the Interior Department.

Weiss pointed to the previous removal of Interior Department Inspector General Mark Lee Greenblatt and argued that the watchdog office has already faced a period of instability.

He also claimed that multiple congressional requests for investigations are currently before the office.

In a statement, Weiss warned that placing a Project 2025 author inside the department’s watchdog structure could compromise public confidence in its independence.
