Is Honda Activa losing Its grip? TVS and EV revolution reshape india’s scooter market
India’s booming scooter market is growing at record speed, but the long-standing dominance of the Honda Activa is facing its toughest challenge yet from TVS Motor and the fast-rising electric vehicle segment.
India’s scooter market is entering a dramatic new chapter.
With demand soaring and electric mobility gaining momentum, the country’s two-wheeler space is witnessing one of its biggest transformations in years. In FY2026, scooter sales touched an all-time high of 8.11 million units, underlining the sector’s rapid expansion.
The growth story has continued into FY2027, with 1.43 million scooters sold in just the first two months a massive 27% jump year-on-year.
But behind these record-breaking numbers lies a much bigger shift: the battle for market dominance is getting tighter.
For nearly 25 years, Honda Activa has ruled India’s scooter segment almost unchallenged. It remains the country’s most trusted and best-selling scooter, known for its reliability, fuel efficiency, and strong resale value.
Backed by Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, the brand sold around 31.6 lakh scooters in FY2026, including Activa, Honda Dio, and a smaller share of electric models.
However, while Honda continues to lead, its grip on the market is gradually weakening.
Its market share has fallen significantly over the years — from nearly 57% in FY2017 to around 39% in FY2026.
That decline doesn’t mean Activa is struggling, but it does signal that competitors are catching up faster than ever.
And leading that charge is TVS Motor Company.
TVS has emerged as Honda’s strongest rival, powered by the success of popular models like TVS Jupiter and TVS NTorq 125.
Both scooters have built strong demand, particularly among younger urban buyers looking for better features, sporty styling, and value-driven pricing.
The company’s market share has nearly doubled over the last decade, climbing from 14% in FY2017 to 28% in FY2026.
What makes the competition even more interesting is the shrinking gap between Honda and TVS.

Back in FY2017, Honda was ahead of TVS by a massive 2.36 million units.
Fast forward to FY2026, and that lead has narrowed sharply to just 859,000 units.
This trend clearly shows that the scooter war is far from one-sided now.
Another major factor driving this change is the electric scooter boom.

India’s EV market is expanding rapidly, and brands that moved early are seeing the rewards. TVS has strengthened its electric footprint with the TVS iQube, which has become one of the country’s top-selling electric scooters.
Honda, on the other hand, is still building its electric lineup and is yet to establish a strong presence in the EV race.
That gap could prove crucial in the coming years as buyers increasingly shift toward greener mobility.
Despite the rising pressure, Honda Activa still remains the king of the road.
Its unmatched trust, wide service network, and proven performance continue to keep it ahead.
But for the first time in years, the crown doesn’t look untouchable.
With TVS gaining momentum and electric scooters rewriting consumer preferences, India’s scooter market is now more competitive than ever — and the coming years could decide whether Activa remains king or if a new leader emerges.
