Apple is reportedly preparing to separate its standard iPhone launch from the Pro lineup, with the iPhone 18 expected to arrive in early 2027 while the iPhone 18 Pro models and first foldable iPhone take centre stage in 2026.

Apple's reported iPhone 18 launch strategy could see the standard model arrive in early 2027, while the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and first foldable iPhone take centre stage in 2026.

NEW DELHI: For years, Apple has followed a familiar September formula: launch the latest standard iPhone alongside its Pro and Pro Max siblings, then let consumers choose between different levels of performance and pricing.

That formula could be about to change.

According to reports surrounding the company’s 2026 product strategy, Apple may delay the standard iPhone 18 until early 2027, while the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to receive the spotlight later this year.

And that’s not the only major change. Apple is also reportedly preparing its first foldable iPhone, potentially creating one of the company’s most expensive and headline-grabbing smartphone launches yet.

Why Is Apple Splitting the iPhone 18 Launch?

The reported change appears to be part of a broader strategy to give Apple’s premium models more attention.

The iPhone 18 Pro series is expected to sit at the top of the conventional iPhone range, while the company’s first foldable iPhone could push Apple’s smartphone pricing into an entirely new territory.

Launching the standard iPhone 18 separately could allow Apple to create another major product moment when the excitement surrounding the premium models has cooled.

For buyers who were expecting the usual full iPhone lineup this year, however, the strategy could be frustrating.

iPhone 17 Already Raised the Bar

The situation becomes more interesting because iPhone 17 brought meaningful upgrades to Apple’s standard model.

Unlike some previous generations where the differences between the base and Pro models were relatively easy to spot, the iPhone 17 received features that made it considerably more attractive.

Among the biggest changes was the introduction of a 120Hz ProMotion display, a feature historically associated with Apple’s Pro models. The phone also received a 48MP camera, while Apple kept the pricing relatively competitive.

That creates a difficult challenge for the iPhone 18.

Simply adding a few incremental improvements may not be enough to generate the same excitement, particularly when Apple’s premium models are expected to dominate the company’s 2026 marketing push.

What Does the Delay Mean for Buyers?

For consumers hoping to purchase a new standard iPhone in 2026, the reported launch schedule could create a difficult choice.

Those who don’t want to pay Pro-level prices may have to either purchase the iPhone 17, consider an older generation, or wait until early 2027 for the standard iPhone 18.

The delay could also change Apple’s usual upgrade cycle.

Instead of customers choosing between the latest standard iPhone and Pro model at the same time, Apple could effectively divide its smartphone audience into two launch windows.

That would represent a significant departure from the company’s established strategy.

iPhone 18 Pro Could Become the Main Attraction

The premium iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to receive most of Apple’s attention during the 2026 launch period.

With Apple reportedly planning more expensive flagship models, the company could use the Pro series to showcase its newest technology while positioning the standard iPhone 18 as a separate, more accessible option when it eventually arrives.

The move also makes commercial sense if Apple wants to increase the average selling price of its smartphone lineup.

The reported arrival of Apple’s first foldable iPhone could further strengthen that premium strategy.

What About iPhone 17 Pro Discounts?

One of the biggest questions for buyers is what happens to the prices of existing Pro models once the new generation arrives.

Normally, the launch of a new iPhone generation creates opportunities to buy the previous Pro model at a lower price.

However, reports suggest that Apple could increase the prices of the iPhone 17 Pro models by around ₹10,000 in the Indian market after the new iPhone 18 series arrives.

If that happens, buyers waiting specifically for discounts on last year’s Pro models may not get the bargain they were expecting.

A New Apple Era Could Begin in 2026

The reported iPhone 18 strategy is about more than simply moving a launch date.

Apple appears to be considering a new way of structuring its smartphone lineup, with different models potentially receiving separate launch windows.

The timing is also notable because the company is expected to introduce a major new product category with its first foldable iPhone. At the same time, Apple could be preparing for a leadership transition, making the 2026 iPhone cycle particularly significant.

For buyers, the message is simple: if you’re waiting for the regular iPhone 18, patience may be required.

The bigger question is whether Apple can convince consumers that waiting until 2027 is worth it—or whether buyers will simply choose the iPhone 17 or pay more for the Pro models instead.
