As buyers lined up outside stores for Apple’s newly launched iPhone 18 series, actor Sonu Sood questioned the rush for an upgrade and said people should also “queue up to make a difference.”
Apple’s iPhone 18 went on sale in India on Friday, September 18, triggering the familiar launch-day rush outside stores as customers queued up to get their hands on the latest models.
Videos and photographs of long queues soon made their way to social media, sparking conversations about premium smartphones, EMIs and the growing excitement surrounding flagship launches. Now, Bollywood actor Sonu Sood has weighed in with a pointed message of his own.
Reacting to the scenes, Sonu suggested that society might need a different kind of “upgrade.”

Taking to X, Sonu Sood wrote: “New phone, new EMI… same old bills!”
The actor then turned the smartphone reference into a broader social message, adding: “Maybe it’s time we queue up to make a difference, not just upgrade our phones. The real upgrade is a better society.”
His remark quickly attracted attention, with social media users debating whether the excitement surrounding expensive smartphones has gone too far.

Some users agreed with the actor and questioned why customers were willing to spend hours waiting for a smartphone that would remain available after launch day.
Others defended buyers, arguing that people should be free to spend their own money however they choose.

The conversation comes as Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max hit stores in India.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rs 1,64,900, while the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max begins at Rs 1,79,900.
Customers opting for higher storage configurations can spend considerably more, with prices reportedly reaching Rs 3,14,900 for the iPhone 18 Pro and Rs 3,29,900 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The latest Pro models are powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip and feature a new vapour chamber thermal system. They are available in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy colour options.
With prices extending well beyond Rs 3 lakh at the top end, Sonu’s reference to “new EMI” has struck a chord with some social media users.

On the professional front, Sonu Sood was last seen in Fateh, a film that also marked a significant step behind the camera for the actor.
Sonu directed and produced the action thriller, which was backed by Shakti Sagar Productions and Zee Studios.
For now, however, it is his comment on the iPhone 18 launch frenzy that is generating discussion online. His message was simple: upgrading technology may be exciting, but according to the actor, “the real upgrade is a better society.”
