Honda’s Scooter Crown Under Pressure? TVS Closes the Gap as India’s Two-Wheeler Race Takes a Surprising Turn
Record scooter sales have reshaped India’s two-wheeler market, with TVS gaining momentum through a strong petrol portfolio and rapidly expanding electric vehicle lineup.
India’s Scooter Market Hits Record High, But Honda’s Dominance Faces a New Challenge
India’s scooter industry is witnessing a major shift. While Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India continues to hold the top position, its once-comfortable lead is shrinking as TVS Motor Company steadily gains ground in one of the world’s largest two-wheeler markets.
The development comes at a time when the Indian scooter segment is experiencing unprecedented growth. Industry data shows scooter sales touched an all-time high of approximately 8.11 million units during FY2026, reflecting the increasing preference for convenient urban mobility solutions across the country.
As demand surges, competition among manufacturers has become fiercer than ever.
Honda Still Leads, But the Gap Is Getting Smaller
For years, Honda enjoyed a commanding position in India’s scooter segment, driven largely by the popularity of models such as the Honda Activa.
However, recent market trends indicate that the Japanese automaker’s grip on the segment is gradually loosening.
Honda’s market share reportedly slipped to around 39 percent during FY2026. While the company remains the market leader, the gap separating it from TVS has narrowed significantly, falling below 860,000 units.
Industry observers believe this is one of the closest contests the scooter market has witnessed in recent years.
TVS Executes a Two-Pronged Growth Strategy
Much of TVS’s recent success can be attributed to its balanced approach toward both conventional and electric mobility.
The company has continued to perform strongly in the petrol scooter category through products such as the TVS Jupiter and TVS Ntorq 125, both of which have found strong acceptance among urban and semi-urban buyers.
At the same time, TVS has aggressively expanded its presence in the electric vehicle segment through the TVS iQube.
This dual strategy appears to be paying off. Electric scooters accounted for nearly 16 percent of the company’s total scooter sales in FY2026, highlighting the growing importance of EVs in India’s mobility landscape.

Electric Revolution Reshaping the Market
The rise of electric scooters is changing competitive dynamics across the industry.
With increasing fuel prices, improved charging infrastructure, and government incentives supporting cleaner transportation, more consumers are considering electric alternatives.
Manufacturers that successfully balance traditional petrol offerings with emerging EV technologies are finding themselves better positioned to capture market share.
TVS has been among the biggest beneficiaries of this trend, leveraging its established dealership network while expanding its electric portfolio.
A Growing Market Means Bigger Opportunities
Despite the intensifying rivalry, industry experts believe both Honda and TVS stand to benefit from the overall expansion of the scooter market.
India’s rapidly urbanising population, rising disposable incomes, and increasing demand for personal mobility continue to fuel growth across the segment.
The scooter market’s strong performance in early FY2027, which registered a year-on-year increase of nearly 27 percent, suggests that demand remains robust.
For consumers, this heightened competition could translate into better technology, improved features, and more attractive pricing as manufacturers battle for market leadership.
What Lies Ahead?
The coming years could prove crucial for both companies.
Honda still enjoys enormous brand loyalty and a vast customer base built over decades. However, TVS’s rapid growth demonstrates that challengers are no longer content with simply following the market leader.
As electric mobility gains traction and consumer preferences evolve, India’s scooter market may witness an even more dramatic reshuffling of positions.
For now, Honda remains on top. But with TVS accelerating across both petrol and electric segments, the race for scooter supremacy is becoming far more competitive than many expected.
And that is precisely why industry watchers will be keeping a close eye on every sales report in the months ahead.
