Tamil Nadu CM Vijay to Move Key Assembly Resolution Over Lok Sabha Seats: “543 Must Remain…”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is set to move a politically significant resolution in the state Assembly on Wednesday, August 12, urging the Union government to permanently maintain the Lok Sabha’s strength at 543 seats, according to official sources.

The move comes amid growing political debate over the proposed delimitation exercise, with the Tamil Nadu government arguing that any fresh redistribution of parliamentary constituencies based on a census conducted after 1971 could disproportionately affect southern states.

Vijay government pushes for 543-seat Lok Sabha

The government-sponsored resolution is expected to call for maintaining the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats and preserving the ratio between the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha at 2.2:1.

The resolution is also expected to urge the Centre to implement the 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha from the 2029 general election without delay, using the existing 543-seat strength as the basis.

The Tamil Nadu government is expected to argue that southern states such as Tamil Nadu, which have made significant efforts to control population growth, could face a reduction in their parliamentary representation if seats are redistributed primarily according to population.

All-party meeting backs opposition to delimitation

The proposed Assembly resolution follows a meeting convened by Vijay on August 8 with Tamil Nadu MPs belonging to alliance and friendly parties.

The meeting reportedly decided to oppose the proposed delimitation exercise and called for safeguards to protect the political representation of southern states.

Participants also backed the demand that the Lok Sabha-Rajya Sabha seat ratio should remain at 2.2:1.

The latest Assembly move comes after Vijay held discussions with parties supporting his government, including the Congress and Left parties.

DMK and AIADMK stay away

However, the political consensus was not complete.

The main opposition DMK and the AIADMK did not participate in the August 8 meeting.

The DMK reportedly boycotted the deliberations, while the AIADMK described the meeting as a “hurriedly staged drama.” The DMK and AIADMK have also criticised the manner in which the discussions were conducted.

Despite the absence of the two major opposition parties, the Vijay-led government decided to proceed with an Assembly resolution aimed at putting Tamil Nadu’s concerns formally on record.

Why delimitation has become a major issue

At the centre of the controversy is the possibility that a future delimitation exercise could alter the distribution of Lok Sabha seats among states.

Southern states have long raised concerns that rewarding population growth through additional parliamentary seats could disadvantage states that successfully implemented family-planning policies and brought down population growth.

Tamil Nadu’s latest resolution is therefore expected to seek a permanent safeguard for the state and other southern states against what the government views as a potential loss of political representation.

The demand to retain the Lok Sabha at 543 seats is also being linked to the implementation of women’s reservation, with the state government seeking clarity and immediate action ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha election.

The Assembly resolution, once passed, could add further pressure on the Centre as political parties across southern India continue to debate how delimitation should be carried out without altering the federal balance.
