Elon Musk has sparked fresh debate in the AI community after claiming that Grok Imagine would produce a full-length AI-generated adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey before the end of 2026.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Musk said the project would aim to be historically accurate and remain faithful to Homer’s classic epic.
The announcement quickly gained traction online, with users questioning whether current AI technology is capable of producing a feature-length film at such a level.
Grok questions Musk’s timeline
In an unexpected twist, Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Musk’s company, responded cautiously when an X user asked about the chances of the project being completed this year.
The chatbot estimated that the likelihood of delivering a 90-minute-plus historically accurate film before the end of 2026 was low.
According to Grok, while AI is already capable of generating impressive short scenes and dialogue, maintaining consistent storytelling, continuity and fidelity to the original work across an entire feature-length movie remains a major technical challenge.
The chatbot also suggested that if such a film were released, it could receive positive reactions for its visuals and faithfulness to the source material, while also facing criticism over AI-generated filmmaking.
