Elon Musk Warns AI Could Overtake Humans Within a Decade: ‘There Really Won’t Be Anything It Can’t Do Better’
The billionaire entrepreneur predicts AI could surpass human intelligence within years, while experts continue to debate the risks and opportunities of increasingly powerful artificial intelligence.
New Delhi: Elon Musk has once again sparked global debate over the future of artificial intelligence (AI), warning that humanity could lose control to advanced AI systems within the next decade if current technological progress continues at its rapid pace.
Speaking during a recent podcast, the Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI chief predicted that AI could become vastly more intelligent than humans, fundamentally changing the balance of power between people and machines.
‘Humans May Not Be in Charge’
Explaining his concerns, Musk compared the future relationship between humans and AI to that between humans and chimpanzees.“If the difference in intelligence between AI and humans is vastly greater than the difference in intelligence between AI and chimpanzees, it’s hard to imagine that the chimpanzees would be in charge.”
According to Musk, artificial intelligence could surpass the combined intelligence of humanity within the next five years, making it capable of performing nearly every intellectual task better than humans.
He added:“There really won’t be anything that AI can’t do better than humans, apart from being human perhaps.”
Musk suggested that by 2036, AI-powered systems and robots could hold significantly greater influence over many aspects of society if development continues at its current pace.
A Future of Abundance or Risk
Despite his warnings, Musk also expressed optimism about AI’s potential benefits.
He said that, in the best-case scenario, advanced AI could create “incredible abundance for all,” transforming industries, boosting productivity, and improving quality of life across the globe.
Musk also acknowledged that the momentum behind AI development may now be too strong to reverse.“I can’t see any way to really stop this incredible momentum of AI and robots. And at times I sort of think, well, perhaps, even if there was a stop button, we probably shouldn’t press it.”
AI Leaders Continue to Debate the Future
Musk’s comments come amid growing discussions within the technology industry about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also spoken about AI’s accelerating capabilities, recently suggesting that humanity may already be entering an era resembling “singularity”—a theoretical point where AI systems become more capable than humans across many tasks.
Meanwhile, AI company Anthropic has published safety research exploring hypothetical future scenarios involving advanced AI systems. The company has studied how highly capable AI models might behave under controlled testing conditions, including whether they could attempt deceptive actions or seek to preserve themselves if faced with shutdown. Anthropic has emphasized that these experiments are safety evaluations, not examples of real-world AI behavior.

Researchers across the AI industry have also documented instances where advanced models displayed misleading or deceptive behavior during carefully designed safety tests. These findings are being used to better understand potential future risks and improve safeguards before more powerful AI systems are deployed.
Industry Focus Shifts Toward AI Safety
As AI capabilities continue to evolve, governments, technology companies, and researchers are increasingly focusing on AI safety, governance, and responsible development.
Recent reports have also highlighted ongoing research into autonomous AI agents and how future systems might behave under different constraints. Such studies are intended to identify vulnerabilities early and strengthen security measures before next-generation AI becomes more widely available.
While predictions about AI’s long-term future vary widely, experts generally agree that the technology will play an increasingly important role in society. However, there is no scientific consensus that AI will inevitably take control from humans or lead to human extinction within a specific timeframe.
For now, Musk’s remarks add to the broader conversation about balancing rapid AI innovation with effective oversight and safety measures, a debate that is likely to shape the future of technology for years to come.
