Tamil Nadu Political Storm: Speaker Issues Showcause Notices to 4 Ex-AIADMK MLAs Now in TVK, Why Only Them?

Tamil Nadu, Assembly Speaker J. C. D. Prabhakar has issued showcause notices to four former MLAs of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam who recently joined the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

The move follows a formal complaint lodged by AIADMK leadership, intensifying the ongoing political tussle in the state.

Why action against only four MLAs?

The Speaker clarified that while 21 AIADMK legislators were granted forgiveness, disciplinary action has been initiated specifically against four lawmakers who switched allegiance under controversial circumstances.

The MLAs in question — S. Jayakumar, K. Maragadham Kumaravel, Sathya Bama, and Isakki Subaya — had played a crucial role during the May 13 trust vote, where they supported the ruling government.

Shortly after, they resigned from the Assembly on May 25 and formally joined the TVK in the presence of senior party leaders, including N. Anand and Aadhav Arjuna.

Speaker cites complaint and prior warning

Speaking to reporters, Speaker Prabhakar confirmed that the action was not sudden but followed earlier warnings.

“Already I had told that they will face action… showcause notices have been issued based on the complaint,” he said.

The complaint was filed by AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who had demanded strict action against the defecting legislators.

Their subsequent resignation and quick entry into TVK further fueled allegations of political opportunism and breach of legislative ethics.
