Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan ends its theatrical run after 27 days with a reported ₹323 crore worldwide collection, but the film struggles to recover its massive budget.

Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan has finally reached the closing stage of its theatrical run, and the numbers paint a rather surprising picture.

The political thriller, which arrived in theatres amid huge expectations, has managed to collect more than ₹323 crore worldwide after 27 days. Yet, despite the impressive headline figure, the film is reportedly heading towards a flop verdict in India because of its enormous production cost.

For Vijay, however, the numbers also underline just how powerful his star appeal remains, particularly considering the film faced delays, piracy and mixed reactions after release.

Jana Nayagan Day 27 box office collection

According to figures reported by Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan opened its theatrical run with a strong collection of around ₹38.2 crore on its first day.

By Day 27, however, the film’s daily earnings had dropped considerably, with the movie reportedly adding approximately ₹0.18 crore to its India net collection.

The film’s total India net collection eventually reached around ₹197.08 crore.

The Tamil version contributed approximately ₹179.91 crore, while the Hindi version collected around ₹17.16 crore. The Telugu version added approximately ₹9.01 crore to the film’s overall India gross.

The reported India gross stood at around ₹229.51 crore.

Worldwide collection crosses ₹323 crore

The worldwide numbers tell a more encouraging story.

Jana Nayagan reportedly accumulated around ₹323.01 crore worldwide, with India contributing approximately 71.05% of the total and overseas markets accounting for the remaining 28.95%.

While the worldwide figure is significant, it needs to be viewed alongside the film’s reported production budget.

According to reports, Jana Nayagan was made at a massive cost of approximately ₹350 crore. Once distribution expenses, promotions and other costs are taken into account, simply crossing the production budget does not necessarily mean the film has recovered its investment.

That is why the movie has reportedly struggled to achieve a profitable theatrical verdict despite crossing the ₹300-crore mark globally.

Did Jana Nayagan really flop?

On the basis of the reported numbers, Jana Nayagan can be considered a commercial disappointment in India.

The biggest issue is the film’s unusually high budget. A ₹197-crore-plus India net collection may sound impressive, but a project reportedly made for around ₹350 crore needs significantly stronger theatrical returns to justify its cost.

At the same time, dismissing the film’s performance entirely would overlook the circumstances surrounding its release.

The movie was delayed before reaching cinemas and subsequently faced piracy issues. It also received mixed-to-mediocre reactions from sections of the audience, making its worldwide performance more notable.

For a star of Vijay’s scale, expectations were naturally much higher.

Vijay’s Hindi market shows a surprising result

One of the more interesting aspects of Jana Nayagan‘s theatrical run was its performance in the Hindi market.

The Hindi version reportedly collected around ₹17.16 crore, making it one of Vijay’s strongest Hindi performers.

In fact, the movie reportedly moved past The Greatest of All Time, which had collected approximately ₹16.6 crore in Hindi.

The result is noteworthy because Jana Nayagan was largely dependent on Vijay’s popularity to attract audiences outside the traditional Tamil market.

Despite competition from new Bollywood releases arriving every week, the Hindi version managed to maintain enough momentum to surpass one of Vijay’s previous benchmarks.

Vijay’s political farewell makes the film different

There is another reason why Jana Nayagan has received so much attention beyond its box office numbers.

The film is widely positioned as Vijay’s final movie before he shifts his focus towards politics.

The actor has already entered Tamil Nadu politics through Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), making Jana Nayagan a particularly significant release in his career.

The film’s story also carries a political flavour. Vijay plays a former police officer who is pulled back into a dangerous situation connected to his past.

The cast includes Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, Prakash Raj, Priyamani and Gautham Vasudev Menon, adding considerable star power to the project.

A ₹323 crore film that still couldn’t become a hit?

That is perhaps the biggest takeaway from Jana Nayagan‘s theatrical run.

Crossing ₹323 crore worldwide would ordinarily be considered a major achievement for many Indian films. But the economics of big-budget cinema can completely change the verdict.

With a reported ₹350-crore production budget and additional theatrical costs, Jana Nayagan needed substantially stronger collections to emerge as a clear commercial success.

So while the film’s box office performance demonstrates Thalapathy Vijay’s enormous fan following, the final verdict appears less flattering when the budget is taken into consideration.

For Vijay, though, Jana Nayagan may ultimately be remembered for something bigger than its final box office verdict: it marks the closing chapter of his film career before his full-time political journey.

And that makes its theatrical run a curious one — a film that crossed ₹323 crore worldwide, yet still couldn’t turn its massive numbers into a clean hit.
