Mahua Moitra backs Abhishek Banerjee amid rising internal tensions within the Trinamool Congress.

Amid growing internal turbulence within the Trinamool Congress, party leader Mahua Moitra has come out strongly in defence of Abhishek Banerjee, addressing allegations of nepotism and asserting that the young leader has earned his position through years of hard work.

In an exclusive interview, Mahua acknowledged that Abhishek, nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, did benefit initially due to family connections. However, she emphasised that his political journey over the last decade reflects dedication and organisational strength.

“Did Abhishek Banerjee get that first ticket in 2014 because he was Mamata Banerjee’s nephew? Yes, he did. But… he’s paid his dues,” Mahua said, underlining his repeated electoral victories and key role as the party’s National General Secretary.

She further added that Abhishek has spent over a decade building the party’s grassroots presence, travelling extensively across the state and strengthening its organisational structure.

Her remarks come at a time when the TMC is grappling with one of its most serious internal challenges, marked by resignations and defections of several senior leaders. Many dissenters have pointed to dissatisfaction with the party’s functioning and Abhishek’s growing influence within the organisation.

Despite the criticism, Mahua made it clear that she supports the leadership structure, stating “He’s much younger than me. I’ve accepted him as a National General Secretary.”

In a sharp comparison, she referenced former TMC leader Suvendu Adhikari, who left the party in 2020 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after openly opposing Abhishek’s rising role.

“I could have been a rebel and done what Suvendu did,” Mahua remarked, adding that she respects leaders who take a clear and transparent political stand.

She questioned the credibility of current dissidents within the party, asking why they did not leave earlier if they had reservations about Abhishek’s leadership.

“If any of these MLAs had a problem… why did they not quit the party before elections and contest elsewhere?” she asked, indirectly challenging their motives.

As the TMC navigates internal unrest ahead of crucial political battles, Mahua Moitra’s remarks signal a strong endorsement of Abhishek Banerjee’s leadership, even as debates over merit, legacy, and power continue within the party.
