Hyderabad: In a major boost to India’s defence preparedness, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has unveiled fresh details about Mission Sudarshan Chakra, a next-generation missile defence initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s security against modern aerial threats.

Speaking during the inauguration of an Advanced Weapon System Complex at the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad, Singh described the project as a transformative step in India’s defence strategy. The mission, first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address in 2025, is envisioned as a comprehensive and multi-layered missile shield for the nation.

According to the Defence Minister, the system will not only safeguard military establishments and strategic assets but will also provide protection to critical civilian infrastructure and important public facilities. The proposed architecture is designed to detect, track, and neutralize threats at multiple levels, ensuring maximum security while minimizing disruption to citizens.

A Three-Layer Defence Network

Rajnath Singh highlighted that Mission Sudarshan Chakra will operate through a sophisticated three-tier protection mechanism. The system is expected to provide rapid response capabilities against incoming threats while maintaining operational flexibility during emergencies.

He emphasized that the platform would possess the ability to deliver a decisive response whenever required, making it a crucial component of India’s future deterrence strategy.

Lessons From Modern Conflicts

The Defence Minister pointed to the evolving nature of global warfare, where missile attacks, drone strikes, and precision-guided weapons have become central elements of military operations. Referring to recent international conflicts, Singh stressed that air defence systems now play a decisive role in protecting nations from hostile actions.

He also praised the effectiveness of India’s indigenous defence technologies during Operation Sindoor, stating that domestically developed systems successfully demonstrated the country’s growing capabilities in advanced military technology.

Commending the efforts of DRDO, Singh said indigenous platforms such as Akash and BrahMos have showcased India’s ability to compete with leading defence powers globally. He noted that the country’s defence research ecosystem has matured significantly and continues to contribute to strategic self-reliance.

The Defence Minister urged scientists and engineers to focus not only on innovation but also on faster production timelines. He stressed the importance of developing systems that can be manufactured rapidly and deployed efficiently whenever national security demands.

Preparing For Future Warfare

Rajnath Singh warned that modern warfare is undergoing a dramatic transformation, driven by technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Hypersonic Weapons, Electronic Warfare Systems, Advanced Sensors, and Autonomous Platforms.

He said nations must possess both resilience and deterrence in an increasingly uncertain global environment. While resilience enables a country to recover from attacks and crises, deterrence ensures that adversaries think twice before attempting aggression.

According to Singh, Mission Sudarshan Chakra represents India’s commitment to staying ahead of emerging security challenges while building a robust defence shield capable of protecting the nation in the decades ahead.
