‘They Broke Open the Lock’: Political Storm Erupts After Police Raid Abhishek Banerjee’s Residence
A massive pre-dawn police operation at Abhishek Banerjee’s Kalighat residence triggered sharp reactions from the Trinamool Congress, with the party alleging forcible entry and political targeting.
A major political controversy erupted in West Bengal on Saturday after police teams, accompanied by central force personnel, conducted a lengthy pre-dawn operation at the Kolkata residence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
According to officials, the operation was linked to a case registered at a police station in Paschim Medinipur district, though authorities did not immediately provide detailed information about the exact nature of the investigation.
The raid comes at a politically sensitive time, just days after the West Bengal CID questioned Banerjee in connection with an alleged forged-signature case related to the state assembly. Reports also suggest that multiple investigating agencies have recently issued fresh summons to the senior TMC leader.
Police Teams Arrived Before Dawn
According to local sources, police personnel from Salboni Police Station in Paschim Medinipur, along with officers from Kolkata Police, reached Banerjee’s residence in the Patuapara area of Kalighat shortly after 3 am.
Central force personnel reportedly took positions outside the premises while police officers moved inside the residence.
The operation quickly drew political attention after the TMC alleged that officers forcibly entered the house by breaking open a lock.
The police action continued for more than four hours, with several officers seen entering and exiting the premises throughout the morning.
Abhishek Banerjee Alleges Forced Entry
Speaking to reporters after the raid, Abhishek Banerjee accused the police of conducting an aggressive search operation inside the residence.
“They broke open the lock, entered the house and searched every room,” Banerjee claimed.
The TMC leadership strongly criticised the operation, describing it as politically motivated and unnecessary.
The incident also prompted immediate intervention from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who reportedly rushed to Abhishek Banerjee’s residence after learning about the developments.
Her arrival further intensified the political atmosphere surrounding the operation.
Political Tensions Rise in Bengal
The latest development has once again heightened tensions between the ruling Trinamool Congress and investigating agencies operating in the state.

Over the past few years, several senior TMC leaders have faced investigations linked to corruption allegations, recruitment scams, and other financial irregularities, often leading to fierce political confrontations between the ruling party and opposition groups.
TMC leaders have repeatedly accused central agencies and law enforcement authorities of selective targeting, while opposition parties have defended the investigations as necessary legal action.

Saturday’s raid is now expected to deepen the already heated political environment in West Bengal ahead of upcoming political battles in the state.
Authorities Yet to Clarify Details
Despite the scale of the operation, officials have not yet publicly disclosed the specific case or evidence that prompted the raid at Banerjee’s residence.
Sources indicated that further legal proceedings and questioning could follow in the coming days as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the dramatic visuals of police personnel and central forces outside the residence have already sparked intense reactions across social media and political circles.
